2006 Fleer ‘Greats of the Game’ – REDS – Eric Davis

2006 Fleer ‘Greats of the Game’ – REDS – Eric Davis

Eric Davis had the tools every scout dreams of finding in a recruit.  Davis’ amazing athletic ability transferred to the baseball diamond and made him an incredible offensive and defensive threat.

In his 17-season career in the major leagues, Davis never did reach his full potential.  Often labeled as ‘Willie Mays - Reincarnated’, Davis’ injuries kept him from playing more than 135 games in any season.  And as the years passed by, one had to wonder as to how good ‘Eric The Red’ could be if he could remain injury free.

Over the course of his career, Davis amassed 282 home runs and collected 349 stolen bases.  A player that was able to hit for power and be a threat on the base paths was rare in the 1980′s and Davis became in instant hit with the Cincinnati Reds’ team and it’s fans.  From 1986-1990, Davis finished in the Top 13 for the MVP award.  His all-around play was being noticed by the baseball world and Davis became one of baseball’s most popular players of that era.

Defensively, Eric Davis was a dominant outfielder that was skilled enough to play all 3 positions.  His incredible speed and arm strength made him stand out and he won 3 Gold Glove awards honoring him as one of baseball’s best defensive outfielders.

Eric Davis made it to one World Series match-up in 1990 with the Reds.  The Reds shocked the world as they swept the mighty Oakland A’s and won the World Series title.  In that series, Davis batted .286 while collecting 5 RBI.

Paul Molitor 1988 Donruss – ‘Baseballs Best’

Paul Molitor 1988 Donruss – ‘Baseballs Best’

Another subset that brags about offering us the sport’s best players, Donruss’ ‘Baseballs Best’ set delivered the goods when it came to the guys they put into their sets.

But they failed miserably with the photo choices.

This one, of Paul Molitor, is horrible.  And for a player that was able to do so many things well at the plate, this picture captures none of that…

My Darryl Strawberry ‘Fab 5′ – Card #3

My Darryl Strawberry ‘Fab 5′ – Card #3

Now that my Darryl Strawberry player collection is complete I wanted to take the time to show off my favorite 5 cards from this set.

Card #3 – 1989 Score

There’s that high leg-kick that Darryl made famous when he broke into the big leagues with the Mets.

Come on, we al tried to adopt that one to our own swings when playing with our friends…

Score captured it perfectly, and while the overall image of the card is a bit on the ‘dark side’, the White uniform worn by Darryl in this photo helps make his image pop off of the background very strongly.

A great one – 1989 Score!!

Coming Soon: Orel Hershiser Signing!!!

Coming Soon: Orel Hershiser Signing!!!

That’s right, one of my favorite pitchers from my childhood is doing a signing and I plan on adding another quality autograph to my collection when this signing happens.

I have ‘chased’ Hershiser on the web for almost a year now in an attempt to snag his autograph, and each time I either failed or the price was a bit too steep for me.

But not anymore…

Hershiser is doing a private signing in August with one of the members of an autograph site that I frequent quite often.  And after an exchange of a few emails, I am all set to get a Orel Hershiser signed baseball in my collection.  For the low(low by standards of other paid Hershiser signings) price of just $30 it is going to be mine.

And it can be yours too.  If you also want to get an item signed by Orel Hershiser, please let me know and I will forward all of the information to you.

I cannot wait for this one!!!

Eddie Murray 2007 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic Game-Used Jersey Card

Eddie Murray 2007 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic Game-Used Jersey Card

Now this is a great looking baseball card.

I love the old Orioles Grey and Orange uniforms.  And even though the piece of Eddie’s jersey that has been captured on this card is White, it does not take away from what is a great looking, and well designed baseball card.

Have a look:

See, I told you.  Classic!!!

Orel Hershiser 1993 Donruss Diamond Kings

Orel Hershiser 1993 Donruss Diamond Kings

I thought these cards were so cool back in the day.

Now when I get them, I quickly scratch them off of my ‘Needs List’ and move on!!

My Darryl Strawberry ‘Fab 5′ – Card #4

My Darryl Strawberry ‘Fab 5′ – Card #4

Now that my Darryl Strawberry player collection is complete I wanted to take the time to show off my favorite 5 cards from this set.

Card #4 – 1988 Fleer

The 1988 Fleer design is not impressive by standards today or even during the year it was issued.

But the photo used of Darryl in his retro Mets uniform makes you forget about the card’s graphic elements and focus right on Darryl.  And I have to think that based on the look on Darryl’s face, the body positioning that he has, and the direction that the fans in the background are looking, that he launched this ball deep into the outfield.

Was it a home run?  We’ll never know for sure.  But we do know that ‘Straw’ smacked 335 round-trippers during his playing days.  And this could have been one of them…

The 600th Different Andre Dawson Baseball Card In My Collection!!!

The 600th Different Andre Dawson Baseball Card In My Collection!!!

I think I timed this one pretty well…  As I have been building up Dawson collection at a pretty serious rate over the last few months, I quickly zoomed by #500 and didn’t get time to celebrate.

So this time, when #600 came up, I made sure that I would take a few minutes to show off my accomplishment and pay honor to #600 by making it a great card.

Here it is:

Andre Dawson 2001 Fleer Greats Certified Autograph

The card looks great, and it features the all-important ‘on card’ autograph that all serious collectors seek!

I am so excited to have this card in my collection – it is a fantastic looking baseball card!!

Cheers to #600!!!

“I SOLD IT, I SOLD IT”

“I SOLD IT, I SOLD IT”

What is it??

Well, you may recall that a few weeks ago I won a radio-station contest.  My prize was a Bose Portable Sounddock.  You can revisit that story here.

Anyway, I did not have much use for it, and after seeing what they were selling for on Ebay, my eyes were widened and I quickly listed that bad-boy.

And now, the item has been sold, payment has been received, and the package has been delivered.

And I can honestly tell you that my PayPal account could not be happier!  With a positive balance that it has never seen before, we are prepared to shop.  And shop we will!!!

I have a very good idea as to how I want to spend a majority of the money, so now I just have to put my plan into action.

Stay tuned as I will show off my purchase(s) as soon as those deals are completed.

Thanks.

Ron Santo 1965 Topps

Ron Santo 1965 Topps

Possibly my favorite design from the 1960s, I am thrilled to add this 1965 Topps card of Ron Santo to my collection that honors him!!

Santo put together a solid campaign in 1965.

A closer look at the numbers – .285 batting average with 173 hits including 30 doubles and 33 home runs.  He also accounted for scoring 88 runs while driving in 101.  Santo made the All-star team, collected another Gold Glove award, and finished in 18th place for the NL MVP award in 1965.

A great addition to my Ron Santo player collection – 1965 Topps!!
