Baseball Card Show Purchase #6 – 2000 Topps’ Version Of ‘The Big Red Machine’

Baseball Card Show Purchase #6 – 2000 Topps’ Version Of ‘The Big Red Machine’

Certainly not the team that won the 1975 and 1976 World Series championships solidifying themselves as one of the greatest dynasties in baseball history, I still like what Topps did with this one.

Come see…

Capturing 4 Reds legends that played for the team as far back in 1969, this card called out to me like no other did at the show.

What’s not to like…  Joe Morgan, Ken Griffey, Jr., Barry Larkin, and Johnny Bench – OH YEAH!!!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #5 – A Sweet Jim Palmer Card

Baseball Card Show Purchase #5 – A Sweet Jim Palmer Card

I didn’t find too many serial numbered cards at this show that served my likes….

Actually, I found just 1 – This one!!!

From the 2005 Fleer Legends set, this card is numbered 587/999, and it is a much better looking card in person than the scan shows.

Black and White image of Palmer works very well with all of the Gold scripting below.  And the Orange frame at both the top and bottom of the card pull the whole thing, and the Orioles theme, all together.

A very solid addition to my Palmer PC.

Baseball Card Show Purchase #4 – (2)2010 Topps T206 Cards Of Reggie & Frank

Baseball Card Show Purchase #4 – (2)2010 Topps T206 Cards Of Reggie & Frank

As it relates to baseball, I love Reggie Jackson and Frank Robinson.

As it relates to baseball cards, I love cards that feature Reggie Jackson and Frank Robinson.

But all of that being said, these two cards are god-awful!!

Terrible artwork.  Terrible design.  Terrible colors.

But nonetheless, these 2 cards are now mine and are resting comfortably contained within my Reggie Jackson and Frank Robinson collections…

Baseball Card Show Purchase #3 – 2009 Topps Heritage ‘Then & Now’ Starring Banks & Howard

Baseball Card Show Purchase #3 – 2009 Topps Heritage ‘Then & Now’ Starring Banks & Howard

I had to scoop this one up the moment that I saw it!!!

I love the design of this cars, and anytime that one of my favorite Cubs players is featured on a modern-era issue, I am probably going to grab it.

And while the card is a great addition to my small Ernie Banks collection, I am a bit puzzled by the combination of Ernie Banks and Ryan Howard.

Both players are major forces when it comes to run production and hitting home runs, but if I had to compare a player from today’s game to Ernie Banks I would go with someone more along the lines of….  Robinson Cano or Miguel Tejada.

But that is just me…

And here is the card…

Baseball Card Show Purchase #2 – Another Hall Of Fame Trio, Mr. Joe Morgan

Baseball Card Show Purchase #2 – Another Hall Of Fame Trio, Mr. Joe Morgan

Yep, another trio and another favorite of ’30-Year Old Cardboard’…

This time, my sights were set on Mr. Joe Morgan.

Check them out:

Of the three, my favorite has to be of the 2005 Upper Deck Classics set.  This series of cards look really sharp – the colors are bold and vibrant, and I enjoy the graphic elements that UD used both in the team and player name banner that runs horizontal near the bottom as well as the sepia-toned images in the background.

I think I am going to have to get some more of these…

Baseball Card Show Purchase #1 – A Nice Trio Of Brooks Robinson

Baseball Card Show Purchase #1 – A Nice Trio Of Brooks Robinson

While I had no goals going into this card show, I always keep a sharp eye out for the modern issues of my baseball heroes.  In this regard, the show treated me very well.

And this trio of cards featuring Brooks Robinson was the perfect start to that shopping experience.

Three fabulous looking cards of one of the greatest defensive infielders of all-time….  I just wish one of them captured him playing at the hot-corner.

But oh, well, I am still very happy to add these three cards to my collection that pays tribute to Mr. Robinson!!

Here they are:

Baseball Card Show Review

Baseball Card Show Review

OK, so I have officially attended my last baseball card show of 2010.  And let me just say that I am ready for a little break.  So far this year, I have attended probably 9-10 of these monthly shows and since the lot of dealers does not change, I’m getting used to seeing the same stuff each and every month.

And while it may sound like I am complaining a bit(I guess I am), I still have a very small handful of dealers that offer me what I like.  And of the 10 or so that attend, I am very loyal to 2 of them.

So, this time around since I was limited to having just 60 minutes to spare at this event, I spent all of my time shopping with the two guys that always have good stuff for me.  And while the 60 minutes wasn’t enough time to get through everything that they had, I did fairly well with the time that I had.

Taking the month of December off will be a nice break - and I look forward to hitting my first show of 2011 roughly eight weeks from now.

But, for today, I will bring you the highlights of my shopping at this card show.  And for just having 60 minutes on the clock, I am very pleased with what I brought home.

Stay tuned with me to ’30-YOC’ all day, as I have 10 very nice purchases to show off for you!!!

Enjoy.

Andre Dawson 2008 Upper Deck SP ‘Generations’ Dual Jersey Relic Card w/Alfonso Soriano

Andre Dawson 2008 Upper Deck SP ‘Generations’ Dual Jersey Relic Card w/Alfonso Soriano

Let’s be real here.  While I like Alfonso Soriano, even more before his Cubs’ years, the real reason that I picked up this card was to add another relic card of Andre Dawson to my collection.

And if the card has to feature another player, I can think of quite a bunch of guys I would rather not have as opposed to Mr. Soriano.

So, here it is…

From Upper Deck SP’s 2008 ‘Generations’ set, tis card is very sharp-looking in person.  Boasting clear photos, and great color, this dual relic card is a wonderful addition to my collection!!

Enjoy.

Gary Carter 1988 Score

Gary Carter 1988 Score

Oh yeah, one of my favorite sets from the 1980′s – Score’s debut 1988!!!

I have told you more times than you probably care to hear it, but I love this set.

And still, each time that I grab a card from it and add it to my player collections, I always wonder if another border color would look better than the one that Score used for said card.

And for this one, that answer is ‘Yes’!

You see it below in Red, now imagine it in Mets’ Orange!!!

Uh huh, that’s what I’m talking about…  :)

Happy Anniversary Eddie Murray!!!

On this day in 1977, Eddie Murray was awarded the Rookie of the Year award.

Taking the league by storm in 1977, it was no surprise when Murray walked away with the top prize of his rookie class.

Jumping right into the starting line-up, and competing in 160 games, ‘Steady Eddie’ was impressive from the get-go.

Putting up numbers that mirrored the veterans on his team, Eddie hit .283 as he collected 173 hits.  Of his 173 hits, 29 were doubles with another 27 being home runs.  Murray was also responsible for driving in 88 runs during that rookie campaign, and he scored an additional 81.

Of the 27 first place votes cast for the Rookie of the Year, Murray captured 12.

 Happy Anniversary Mr. Murray!!!
