Jim Palmer 2008 Donruss ‘Sports Legends’

Jim Palmer 2008 Donruss ‘Sports Legends’

When I came across this set produced by Donruss in 2008, I was immediately intrigued.

As you can imagine, my mind soared with the perspective players that could be in a set titled ‘Sports Legends’.  From Babe to Wilt to Montana to Gretzky, the sky was definitely the limit.

And while I am a little surprised to find  Jim Palmer in this set as well, I am very proud to see him there being celebrated with these other elite players.

One heck of a card, one hell of a set!!!

Wade Boggs 1986 Fleer Limited Edition

Wade Boggs 1986 Fleer Limited Edition

Just one of the many ‘limited edition’ baseball cards issued in the 1980′s that are now worth not much more than a nickel…

And when I think about all of the money that I put into cards like these back when they were issued – WoW!!!

1988 Fleer Superstar Specials – Card #625 – Dave Righetti & Dan Plesac

1988 Fleer Superstar Specials – Card #625 – Dave Righetti & Dan Plesac

“Classic Relief”

There is no more valuable member of a team that the relief pitcher who can enter a close game in the late innings and shut down the opposition.  Such relievers are called ‘stoppers’, and in 1987 the Yankees’ Dave Righetti and the Brewers’ Dan Plesac performed these roles for their respective teams.

Righetti followed up his record-setting 1986 season with another impressive campaign.  His 31 saves ranked second best in the league.  These saves, combined with his eight victories, show that Righetti had a hand in 30 of the Yankees’ 89 wins.  Since leaving the Yankees’ starting rotation after the 1983 season, ‘Rags’ has averaged more than 34 saves per season.

Plesac was a major factor in Milwaukee’s surprising success in 1987.  He appeared in 57 games, saving 23 and winning 5.  His ERA was an impressive 2.61.  The Brewers started the season with an incredible 13-straight victories.  Dan pitched in seven of those games, notching five saves.

Both of these relievers were members of the 1987 American League All-Star team.  It was Righetti’s second All-Star selection and Plesac’s first.

Tigers to retire Sparky Anderson’s number

Tigers to retire Sparky Anderson’s number

DETROIT (AP)—The Detroit Tigers will retire Sparky Anderson’s No. 11 this year, one of several gestures the team is planning to honor the late manager.

The Tigers also will wear a commemorative patch to honor the Hall of Fame manager who led them to the World Series title in 1984, and raise a flag with his name on it at their home opener.

“When you think of great managers and people in the game that really epitomize what it is to be a baseball manager … you think of Sparky Anderson,” general manager Dave Dombrowski said Saturday.

Anderson, who also won the World Series twice as Cincinnati’s manager, died Nov. 4. Dombrowski expressed regret that Anderson passed away before his number was retired.

“I know in a way, it’s a shame,” Dombrowski said. “It’s the same thing, I see somebody go into the Hall of Fame, and you say, ‘Gee, I wish they’d gone in when they were alive.”’

The date for the number retirement has yet to be determined.

In 2009, the Tigers celebrated the 25th anniversary of their last World Series title. Anderson easily drew the loudest cheers at Comerica Park when he was introduced with players from the 1984 squad.

“I remember it all,” said Jim Leyland, Detroit’s current manager. “I remember seeing Sparky out in the hallway and having a conversation with him. He didn’t want to come in the clubhouse, but I went out, and we had a great conversation.”

Anderson will be the sixth Tiger to have his number retired by the team.

“The Tigers don’t really have a lot of retired numbers, so that’s a real honor, and well deserved,” Leyland said. “I’m glad they didn’t retire mine today.”

Leyland and Dombrowski were at snowy Comerica Park on Saturday for TigerFest, the team’s annual winter fan event. Victor Martinez(notes), the team’s biggest offseason acquisition, was on hand as well.

The Tigers also added starting pitcher Brad Penny(notes) and reliever Joaquin Benoit(notes), moves they hope will help them return to the postseason for the first time since winning the American League pennant in 2006, Leyland’s first year as the team’s manager.

Detroit went 81-81 last season, finishing 13 games behind first-place Minnesota.

Martinez, who played previously for Cleveland and Boston, is no stranger to chilly weather, but he was impressed with Saturday’s turnout.

“It’s like 10 degrees outside,” he said. “You see … people outside, just like they’re waiting to see a game. That tells you something. That tells you a lot.”

Notes: Dombrowski said trade talks are progressing for RHP Armando Galarraga(notes), whom Detroit designated for assignment Tuesday. Detroit is in the middle of a 10-day window to make a move with Galarraga, who became expendable when Penny signed. “Not quite at a position to make any announcements,” Dombrowski said. “I would think, at least by the middle of next week, we’d be in a position where we would make a deal.” … Leyland plans to bat Martinez fifth and OF Magglio Ordonez(notes) third. “You can etch that in stone,” he said. … Dombrowski said 2B Carlos Guillen(notes) is making progress as he recovers from a left knee injury from August. “The doctor projects that Carlos should be able to play in games around the middle of March,” Dombrowski said.

Andre Dawson 2010 Topps Sterling ‘Timely Tags’ 4-Pc Game Used Jersey Card

Andre Dawson 2010 Topps Sterling ‘Timely Tags’ 4-Pc Game Used Jersey Card

How sweet is this one??

Yeah, I know…

It takes a lot for me to really like a modern baseball card.  But Topps hooked me with this card from their 2010 Sterling set.

Featuring ‘The Hawk’ and numbered as 18/25, this baseball card is an instant hit in the ’30-YOC’ collection that pays homage to my favorite baseball player of all-time!!

There are tons of multi-relic cards in this Sterling set – hopefully this is just the first of many that I obtain!!

Fingers Crossed!!

Ernie Banks 2010 Topps ‘Tales Of The Game’ – “Let’s Play Two!!!”

Ernie Banks 2010 Topps ‘Tales Of The Game’ – “Let’s Play Two!!!”

From the back of the card – Banks expressed his dep passion for the game with three little words: “Let’s Play Two!”  Often uttered on sunny days as a genial request for a doubleheader, the phrase became as synonymous with the Cubs slugger as his 512 career home runs, outstanding defense, and two NL MVP awards.  Ernie’s cheerful disposition and eager playing style made him one of the most popular figures in Chicago Sports history.

Gary Carter 1985 Donruss Highlights

Gary Carter 1985 Donruss Highlights

There’s that award-winning smile again…  Man Gary Carter sure did love the camera, huh??

This card, from the 1985 Donruss Highlights set, pays tribute to Carter winning the National League Player of the Month award in September of the 1985 baseball season.

I guess with an acknowledgement like that, he’s allowed to show off that killer smile!!!

Juan Marichal 1970 Topps All-Star

Juan Marichal 1970 Topps All-Star

These All-Star cards from the 1970 Topps set are very possibly my favorite set of All-Star cards ever issued.

Brilliantly designed, and plain fun to look at, I cannot believe that I was able to bring this card of Juan Marichal home for just $0.99.

And you know me.  If I see a bargain, and it is of a guy that I like – I am going to pounce!!!

This card celebrates Marichal’s 1969 baseball season - and it was spectacular!!  During that season, Marichal started 36 games while compiling a 21-11 record.  Amazingly, he threw 27 complete games that year, 8 of which were shut-outs.  He also racked up 205 strikeouts while walking just 54 batters.

The 1969 baseball season marked Juan Marichal’s 8th appearance as an All-Star.  He would go on to make the squad one more time, in 1971.

And the back of the card is pretty sweet too!!

Ozzie Smith 1995 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice

Ozzie Smith 1995 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice

Now I don’t know about you, but it really looks like Ozzie is about to get ahold of one on this swing!!

With perfect balance, his eyes on the ball, and a level bat, Ozzie is about to crush that 9-inch baseball and send it into orbit!!!

Congratulations to the photographer that captured this perfect swing and what I am thinking was a perfect result!!!

A great addition to my Ozzie Smith collection.
