Fergie Jenkins 2003 Flair Greats

Fergie Jenkins 2003 Flair Greats

Yesterday I showed you the Bobby Doerr card that I picked up from this set, so I figured that today was the perfect opportunity to show you the Fergie that I also nabbed from the same set.

Brimming with a ton of ‘Cubbie Blue’, this card is really strong!!

Starting with a great action shot of Fergie right at the release point of his pitching motion, I like how Fleer made his image prominent by placing it on top of the card’s graphics.  I believe that the technical term for this is ‘layering’ and I am a fan!!

And that little bar of Blue that runs up the left-side of the card matches Fergie’s socks, sleeves, and cap perfectly!!

Nice, huh??

Bo Jackson 1990 Fleer

Bo Jackson 1990 Fleer

While far from stunning, the 1990 Fleer baseball card design does look pretty good when matched with the team colors of the Kansas City Royals.

Specifically, the Yellow border and nameplate and how they are a perfect color match to the crown that rests upon the top of the Royals’ logo.

As for the card as a whole, I like it but I just wish that the photo showed us more.  Bo Jackson had one of the strongest swings in baseball – a great match of power and speed.  And while the card’s picture does show Bo taking a mighty cut, we are missing way too much of the action in my opinion…

See for yourself:

Dennis Eckersley 1982 Donruss

Dennis Eckersley 1982 Donruss

There is always something that stands out to me when I look closely at a baseball card.

And for this 1982 Donruss card that features Dennis Eckersley, it is the color of the Fenway Park outfield wall and how well it works with the bright Green stripe that makes up this card’s border.

A perfect match, and a perfect frame – the Green looks fantastic!!

Did You Know…

Mike Marshall was the first relief pitcher to win the Cy Young Award.  In 1974, Marshall made 106 appearances for the Los Angeles Dodger.  Throwing 208 innings in relief, Marshall won 15 games, saved 21, and posted a very low 2.42 ERA.  Marshall also finished in third place for the ML MVP award.

Yes, I said 106 appearances!  WHOA!!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #10 – Andre Dawson Florida Marlins Commemorative Pin!!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #10 – Andre Dawson Florida Marlins Commemorative Pin!!!

Hardly a baseball card, this is the first time that I have made a non-cardboard purchase at a show in months.  At least 6-7 shows have passed since I last added an item that was not produced by Topps, Fleer, Donruss, etc.

But I have to say – I think I found a gem here!!!

Issued in 1995 as part of a series of five pins being distributed to fans in attendance, The Marlins honored Andre Dawson on September 27 with his very own commemorative pin.

And it looks pretty sharp too!!!  no pun intended.

Here is a photo of the pin and the tag it was mounted to:

And here is a shot of the back:

A very unique addition to my Dawson memorabilia collection.  I never would have thought that I would find an item like this as this show.  Usually, all of my time is spent with just 3 dealers – I am glad that I stick to my habit of making a full lap of the show before stopping.  If I did not do that, this pin would not be with me today!!

Thanks.

Baseball Card Show Purchase #10 – Sparky Anderson 2000 Topps Tribute

Baseball Card Show Purchase #10 – Sparky Anderson 2000 Topps Tribute

While I prefer to remember Sparky in his Reds’ uniform versus the Tigers’ one that he is wearing in the photo of this 2000 Topps Tribute baseball card, I will never turn away the opportunity to honor one of my favorite managers of all-time.

And for the price of a dime, this purchase is without a doubt my favorite from the show!!

Rest In Peace, my friend.  Your are dearly missed!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #9 – (4)2010 Andre Dawson Tri-Star Obak Cards

Baseball Card Show Purchase #9 – (4)2010 Andre Dawson Tri-Star Obak Cards

Not too sure why I grabbed these.  But as I leafed through the ‘Obak’ section of the bargain bins I was cruising through, I found all four of these Dawsons sitting in a row.

The picture used of Andre is a familiar one – that very strong follow-through to his mighty swing!   I just have no clue what in the hell is happening behind him…

Is that a barn?

Oh well, if anyone wants one of these just say the word and it is yours!!

Baseball Card Show Purchase #8 – Tony Gwynn ’50 Years Of Topps’

Baseball Card Show Purchase #8 – Tony Gwynn ’50 Years Of Topps’

Jeez, I may have to go after this whole set…  And if I can find all of the cards that are part of it and pay just a dime per card, I am all over it!!!

The third and final card that  I nabbed from the set that pays tribute to Topps’ 50 years in the baseball card business is a reprint of Tony Gwynn’s 1983 Topps baseball card, his rookie card!

Of the three that I grabbed, this one is a bit of a let-down.  The cameo portrait of Gwynn used is just plain awful.  And for some reason, the colors are just way to dark this time around…

See for yourself.

I told you…

Baseball Card Show Purchase #7 – A Gaggle Of Rafael Palmeiro Rookie Cards

Baseball Card Show Purchase #7 – A Gaggle Of Rafael Palmeiro Rookie Cards

I know, I know.  Not too popular of a purchase for many of the readers of 30-Year Old Cardboard.

But, I couldn’t resist.  I was on a mission to grab some cheap rookie cards at this show, and finding a rookie card of Raffy for just ten cents seemed way too good of a buy to pass up.  So, I bought ten of them!!

2 1987 Donruss Rated Rookies and 8 1987 Topps Future Stars!!!

Anyone jealous?  Anyone?  Bueller?

:)

Baseball Card Show Purchase #6 – Steve Carlton ’50 Years Of Topps’

Baseball Card Show Purchase #6 – Steve Carlton ’50 Years Of Topps’

I recently added a modern baseball card of Steve Carlton to my collection of him wearing his Cardinals uniform.  I thought that it would only be fitting to try to find one of ‘Lefty’ in the uniform in which he had the most success.

So, here is Steve Carlton in his Phillies’ uniform - the reprint shown is a 1977 Topps base card.

Enjoy!!
