Dwight Gooden 1985 Fleer Superstar Specials w/Juan Samuel

Dwight Gooden 1985 Fleer Superstar Specials w/Juan Samuel

Another great addition to my Dwight Gooden player collection.

And while this baseball card features two rookie stars from the 1984 baseball season, to me there is one truly dominant player – Dwight ‘Doc’ Gooden.

In 1984, Gooden captivated the baseball world and became a national star!!  His numbers were unreal – 17-9 record, 7 complete games, 3 shutouts, 2.60 ERA, and an amazing 276 strikeouts!!

Not too shabby for a 19-year old kid, huh???

Did You Know…

Babe Ruth holds the record for the most extra-base hits in a single season with 119.  In 1921, Ruth connected for 44 doubles, 16 triples, and 59 home runs.

Lou Brock 2010 Topps Triple Threads – SWEET!!!!

Lou Brock 2010 Topps Triple Threads – SWEET!!!!

Wow, this one is a beauty!!!

I love how the picture of Brock really jumps off the card.  And if you cannot see that in the scan, I apologize – and you’ll just have to take my word for it.

And I also really like the background of the photo – the batting practice scene looks very cool!!

It also doesn’t hurt that the card is serial numbered as 97/1350 – and I love the Silver lettering throughout!!!

Steve Carlton 2005 Upper Deck ‘Past Time Pennants’

Steve Carlton 2005 Upper Deck ‘Past Time Pennants’

I absolutely DO NOT object to when a card features a Black & White image.  To be honest, I prefer it - I love the way it captures the feel of a vintage card and style.

And if I had to register just one complaint about this card it would be the complete lack of color.

Just too much Black, White, Grey, and Silver.

If Upper Deck had given us just a little splash of Maroon to go with the Phillies’ uniform this card would go from very good to outstanding…

Take a look:

Wade Boggs 1992 Fleer

Wade Boggs 1992 Fleer

Green is good – especially when you played for the Boston Red Sox.

This card of Wade Boggs, from the 1992 Fleer baseball card set, has a very nice ‘Green Monster’ kind of feel to it.

And I am digging it!!!

1987 Topps ‘Turn Back The Clock’ – Card #2 – Reggie Jackson

1987 Topps ‘Turn Back The Clock’ – Card #2 – Reggie Jackson

‘Ten Years Ago’

Whoa – Look at the coolest guy in the baseball world – Reginald Martinez Jackson.  Reggie was able to captivate like no other – and whether you were cheering for him or rooting against him, Reggie was the absolute center of attention each and every time he approached the plate.

Here is his card from the 1987 Topps ‘Turn Back The Clock’ set:

Some of the highlights mentioned on the back from the ’77 season include:

  1. 4 Dodgers collecting 30 or more home runs – Garvey, Baker, Cey, and Smith
  2. McCovey’s 2 HR in same inning makes him the only player to ever accomplish feat twice
  3. Nolan Ryan striking out 10+ batters 20 times in 37 starts
  4. Reggie Jackson’s Word Series – unreal!!

Happy Anniversary Andre Dawson!!!

Happy Anniversary Andre Dawson!!!

On this day in 2010, Andre Dawson was enshrined into the Baseball Hall Of Fame.

Unquestionably my favorite baseball player of all-time, I have so many fond memories of watching Dawson perform in his Expos, Marlins, Red Sox, and Marlins uniforms.  But it was his performance on July 25, 2010 in front of the library at Cooperstown that will remain engrained with me forever.

Executing a perfect speech while looking like a presidential candidate, Andre Dawson captivated me once again; more than 25 years after he first made an impression on me.

Congratulations and Happy Anniversary ‘Hawk’.  One of the greatest sports moments of my life – provided courtesy of my favorite player!!!

’30-YOC Top Ten Lists’ – ‘Top Ten Ballparks I’d Like To Visit’

’30-YOC Top Ten Lists’ – ‘Top Ten Ballparks I’d Like To Visit’

I love to take road-trips.  If I could have my way, all of my vacations would involve touring around North America cruising from great city to great city.

In the last 5 years, I have flown to the following states and then rented a car with the purpose of touring around:  Colorado, Tennessee, Kansas, Missouri, Chicago, and Texas.

And each time we go somewhere, I always make the comment, ‘I’d love to catch a big league game here’.  So far, I have been shut out.  But as my boys get bigger and become baseball fans, fingers crossed, I am hoping we can take in some ball games in other parks around the country.

Here is a list of the ‘Top Ten Ballparks I’d Like To Visit’.

10 – Rangers Ballpark At Arlington, TX

9 – Target Field, MN

8 – Turner Field, GA

7 – Busch Stadium, MO

6 - Great American Ballpark, OH

5 – Rogers Center, Canada

4 – AT&T Park, CA

3 – Orioles Park At Camden Yards, MD

2 – Yankee Stadium, NY

1 – Fenway Park, MA

Man, I am ready to go now!!  Who’s with me??
