Joe Morgan ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1973 Topps

Joe Morgan ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1973 Topps

Now that my Joe Morgan collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #4 – 1973 Topps

While not stellar when discussing design, this baseball card offers a more plain approach.

But one thing that it does do very well is convey the message of the 1970s – Just check out Joe’s sideburns!!!

Fantastic.

Here is the card:

Oh, and I am digging the little shadowed image of the 2nd baseman too…

Happy Anniversary Mark McGwire!!!

Happy Anniversary Mark McGwire!!!

On this day in 1998, Mark McGwire connected for the 70th home run of his baseball season.

A number that nobody thought was possible – 70 home runs in a single baseball season - Mark McGwire was on top of the world.

I cannot believe that this was 13 years ago – Happy Anniversary ‘Big Mac’!!!!

Happy Anniversary Barry Bonds!!!

Happy Anniversary Barry Bonds!!!

On this day in 1996, Barry Bonds joined an elite class of baseball player by becoming a member of the ’40/40 Club’.

On the road in Colorado, and nearing the end of the 1998 baseball season, Barry Bonds swiped the 40th base of his season.  That steal, his last one of the 1998 season, became monumental occasion launching Bonds into another world of player.

The third member of the group, Bonds’ all-around athletic game put him on par with Jose Canseco and Alex Rodriguez.

Happy Anniversary Mr. Bonds!!!

Happy Birthday Mike Schmidt!!!

Happy Birthday Mike Schmidt!!!

That’s right arguably the best 3rd baseman in baseball’s incredible history is celebrating his birthday as he is 62 years old today!!

Happy Birthday to the only 3rd baseman to hit 500+ home runs, win 3 MVP awards, and an amazing 10 Gold Gloves!!!

Happy Birthday to Michael Jack Schmidt!!!

Will Ozzie Guillen Be The First Manager In Miami Marlins History??

CHICAGO — After eight seasons, two American League Central titles, one World Series championship and countless entertaining moments on the South Side of Chicago, the White Sox agreed to manager Ozzie Guillen’s request to be released from his contract. The move allowed the manager to pursue other opportunities.

Guillen is expected to be named the next manager of the Marlins, possibly as soon as Wednesday. Marlins manager Jack McKeon announced earlier Monday that he will be retiring when the season ends Wednesday. The White Sox retain rights to compensation should Guillen accept a managerial position with another Major League team in 2012.

Marlins hitting coach Eduardo Perez, Marlins third-base coach Joe Espada and Nationals third-base coach Bo Porter all interviewed for the Marlins’ job Monday. If Guillen joins the Marlins, a source told MLB.com that the compensation is expected to be infielder Ozzie Martinez and a Minor League pitcher.

“There is something in place in the event that one particular team gets him,” said White Sox general manager Ken Williams of the potential return for Guillen. “But he’s free to negotiate with anybody. He’s free to talk to anybody at this point and time.”

Cal

Cal

Wow, I don’t even know where to start with this one…

I think that this could classify as the greatest addition to my autograph collection from 2011.  And we still have more than three months left in the year…

Cal Ripken signs one or two times a year through the Dugout Zone in Maryland.  I missed the last signing, due to my being lazy, so when this summer’s signing was announced, I pounced.

And now, the ball is home.

The ball looks fantastic.

Take a look:

I feel like a kid right now.  Enjoy.

Stuck On Fergie Jenkins!!

Stuck On Fergie Jenkins!!

I am loving these great, little oddballs of Fergie.

And this time around, while it is not a baseball card issued by a soft drink company or a cupcake vendor or a hardware company, they are great additions to my Fergie Jenkins collection!

1 stamp and 2 stickers.

3 great ‘new’ additions.

Welcome!

And my love/hate relationship with the Diamond King continues….

This one is leaning towards the hate side.  Sorry to say.

Joe Morgan ‘Fab Five’ – Card #5 – 1975 Topps

Joe Morgan ‘Fab Five’ – Card #5 – 1975 Topps

Now that my Joe Morgan collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #5 – 1975 Topps

The two-tone color scheme from the ’75 Topps set is legendary.  And for all of the Pinks, Greens, and Purples mixed into the set, everyone once in a while Topps adopted the team’s colors for a certain card or player.

Luckily, for me, Joe Morgan’s card was one of them!

Featuring a beautiful Red & Yellow border, Morgan’s card is wrapped in team spirit.  And I’m digging the All-Star logo in the lower-right corner too…

Here it is:

1989 Topps Turn Back The Clock – Card #3 – Hank Aaron & The 1974 Baseball Season

1989 Topps Turn Back The Clock – Card #3 – Hank Aaron & The 1974 Baseball Season

“Fifteen Years Ago”

This card is card #3 from the 1989 Topps ‘Turn Back The Clock Set’.  The card features Hank Aaron’s 1974 Topps baseball card on the front and recalls some of the greatest highlights from the ’74 season on the back.

A few of my favorites from that year:

  • Al Kaline’s 3,000th hit
  • Bob Gibson’s 3,000th strikeout
  • Lou Brock’s single season record of 118 steals
  • Hank Aaron becoming major league baseball’s all-time home run king
