“STATE OF THE DAWSON”

“STATE OF THE DAWSON”

As we end 2011 and head into 2012, I though that this would be a good time to provide a quick update as to the status of my Andre Dawson baseball card collection.

2011 was a fantastic year of growth for my Andre Dawson collection.  The attention given to him by Topps after his 2010 Hall of Fame induction equated to him being in many of the year’s releases.  I easily added over 100 new cards of Dawson to my collection this year, brining my grand total to 936 Unique Andre Dawson baseball cards!!!

Along with all of the modern-era stuff that I grabbed, I also went old-school nabbing a decent sized handful of cards issued during Andre’s playing days that had eluded me prior.

Here is a recap of how my collection stacks up today:
– 501 cards issued during Andre’s playing days
– 235 modern-era cards issued after Andre’s retirement
– 71 Autographs (IP & TTM, includes cards from my Inscription Set)
– 98 Game-Used relic cards
– 31 Certified Autographs

Pretty sweet stuff right there!!!

I have already had a peek of some of the 2012 checklists and it looks like Andre will once again be present in many of Topps’ releases – I CANNOT WAIT!!!

Thank you.

“STATE OF THE JENKINS”

“STATE OF THE JENKINS”

As we end 2011 and head into 2012, I though that this would be a good time to provide a quick update as to the status of my Fergie Jenkins baseball card collection.

The collection really took shape this past year, as I looked beyond the cards that were issued during Fergie’s playing days.  Between the modern-era cards, Game-Used relics, and certified autographed cards, I was able to get my collection up to 197 different cards – well over 80 new additions during 2011.

Here is a small breakdown of that collection:
– 57 cards from Fergie’s playing days
– 94 modern-era cards issued after Fergie’s retirement
– 29 Game-Used relic cards
– 6 Autographed cards (IP & TTM)
– 9 Certified Autographs

And there you have it.  It has been a fantastic year collecting Fergie’s stuff and I look forward to seeing what 2012 has to offer me and my collection that honors my favorite pitcher of all-time!!

Thank you!!!

Rollie Fingers 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

Rollie Fingers 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

Man, how fun is it to find a card of Rollie Fingers?  Just seeing cards of Rollie has to make you smile.

Between the name and the ‘stache, Rollie Fingers was always a fun pull.  As was this card:

Patterned after the 1982 Topps baseball card design, the card features a great photo and some perfect colors.

As for Rollie, 1982 was his second team with the Milwaukee Brewers.  He compiled a 5-6 record that year with 29 saves.  He also made his 6th All-Star appearance in ’82.

Tony Gwynn 1985 Topps All-Star ‘Send In’

Tony Gwynn 1985 Topps All-Star ‘Send In’

A wonderful, great way to celebrate the collectors that helped build your company – but the cards hardly lived up to the hype that they promised…

An example of that is this one of Tony Gwynn from the 1985 Topps Send-In set.

Take a look:

See what I mean?  Far from spectacular, and far from a reward for the money spent on all of that wax…

1972 Headline: ‘Roberto Clemente Dead At 38′

1972 Headline: ‘Roberto Clemente Dead At 38′

From Wikipedia:

Clemente spent much of his time during the off-season involved in charity work. When Managua, the capital city of Nicaragua, was affected by a massive earthquake on December 23, 1972, Clemente (who had been visiting Managua three weeks before the quake) immediately set to work arranging emergency relief flights.  He soon learned, however, that the aid packages on the first three flights had been diverted by corrupt officials of the Somoza government, never reaching victims of the quake.

Clemente decided to accompany the fourth relief flight, hoping that his presence would ensure that the aid would be delivered to the survivors. The airplane he chartered for a New Year’s Eve flight, a Douglas DC-7, had a history of mechanical problems and sub-par flight personnel, and it was overloaded by 4,200 pounds.  It crashed into the ocean off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico immediately after takeoff on December 31, 1972. A few days after the crash, the body of the pilot and part of the fuselage of the plane were found. An empty flight case apparently belonging to Clemente was the only personal item recovered from the plane. Clemente’s teammate and close friend Manny Sanguillen was the only member of the Pirates not to attend Roberto’s memorial service. The catcher chose instead to dive into the waters where Clemente’s plane had crashed in an effort to find his teammate. Clemente’s body was never recovered.

At the time of his death, Clemente had established several records with the Pirates, including most triples in a game (three) and hits in two consecutive games (ten),. These include tying the record for most Gold Glove Awards won among outfielders with twelve, which he shares with Willie Mays.  He also became the only player to have ever hit a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam.  He accomplished this historic baseball-event on July 25, 1956 in a 9-8 Pittsburgh win against the Chicago Cubs, at Forbes Field. In addition, he was one of four players to have ten or more Gold Gloves and a lifetime batting average of .317.

Joe Morgan 2006 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts – ‘Legendary Materials’

Joe Morgan 2006 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts – ‘Legendary Materials’

I was able to snag this card on the cheap – and considering that it is limited to just 99 copies, I think I got a steal!!!

Paying just $2.10 for this beautiful Joe Morgan Game-Used jersey card was a no-brainer!!!  And it is a fantastic addition to my Joe Morgan baseball card collection.

Have a peek:

While a car d with this much Bronze coloring normally would be too offensive for my liking, this one is actually pretty solid in my opinion.  And what all of this extra Bronze does is allow for that sweet, Red swatch under Morgan’s photo to POP!!!

Great card!!!

Andre Dawson 1955 Upper Deck – Collector’s Choice – GOLD

Andre Dawson 1955 Upper Deck – Collector’s Choice – GOLD

A little old-school here, but hardly vintage.  Still, it is nice to grab another card that I was missing for my Andre Dawson collection.

This card is the Gold parallel version of Andre’s Collector’s Choice card from the 1995 issue.

I like the Gold border, it makes for a nice subset to collect.

And that Golden Dawson autograph is devine!!!

Fergie Jenkins 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia

Fergie Jenkins 2005 Playoff Absolute Memorabilia

A little boring (OK, a lot boring) but still another card I can add to my Fergie Jenkins checklist.

And the list is really starting to shape up nicely if I do say so myself…

Dwight Gooden 1986 Donruss Highlights

Dwight Gooden 1986 Donruss Highlights

Well, ‘Doc’ was featured in the 1985 Donruss Highlights set 3 times.  And while his sophomore season in the majors may not have been as surprising as his rookie campaign, he was still unreal in 1986!!

This card commemorates Dwight Gooden’s pitcher of the mother performance in April, 1986.  During the month, Gooden went 5-1 in 6 starts.  Not a bad head-start to his 17-6 season!

Happy Birthday Sandy Koufax!!!

Happy Birthday Sandy Koufax!!!

Today, Sandy Koufax turns 77 years old.

Koufax’s name is often mentioned in the same breath when people speak of the greatest pitchers of all-time.  Truth be told, during his 12-year career with the Brooklyn and the Los Angeles Dodgers, Koufax did not shine until the last 6 seasons he played.  But boy did he shine…  From 1961 to 1966, Koufax won 3 Cy Young awards and finished in 2nd place 1 time.  He also won an MVP award and finished 2nd twice for that honor.  It can be easily argued that Sandy Koufax was elected into baseball’s Hall Of Fame for this short, but incredible 6-year span.

So what do you get a guy that has so many accolades to his credit?  Sandy Koufax retired at the age of 31.  In today’s game there are players that have yet to hit their prime by 31…  I would love to see what Sandy could have done with 5 more seasons.  So that is my gift, 5 more healthy seasons as a pitcher for the Dodgers.

Happy Birthday Mr. Koufax!!!
