Best first-baseman ever?? Im just asking because I honestly cant answer that one… I think Tex with the Yankees is really good and Ive seen Pujols work pretty nicely over there. Can Anyone offer an opinion?
Full disclosure: I’m completely biased because Mattingly is my favorite all-time player…….
No. Not the best 1B of all time – best fielding perhaps, yes. But with such a distinguished list, it is even a bit challenging for me to place him in the Top 10. And that hurts me to even say it.
Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Johnny Mize, Hank Greenberg, Cap Anson, Willie MCCovey – these are just a few. There’s a lot of home runs, Championship titles, Hit Club members and league dominance in that list. And some of these fellas had their prime years cut short by war-time service. What might have been?!
I will say this – The HitMan DOES deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. I think he will have to wait for his fellow Veterans to vote him in, but I think his personal accolades in the field and at the plate when combined with his status as the best in the game for a multi-year span during his prime, makes him a Hall-worthy first-baseman.
There are MANY who would disagree strongly with this and I can easily respect a lot of their arguments.
But I think he deserves to be in and I will be THERE in Cooperstown when it happens
Great factoid on my favorite player, BA!
