Ernie Banks 2004 Fleer Greats

Ernie Banks 2004 Fleer Greats

At first glance, I did not think that it was Ernie Banks that was featured on this card from the 2004 Fleer Greats set.

The picture, and style, the uniform – it all just seems very old.

A closer look reveals that the featured player is indeed Ernie Banks, and was taken sometime during the late 1950′s.

Here is the card:

My fascination with the stars of the Chicago Cubs starts with the 1961 rookie seasons of Billy Williams and Ron Santo.  I don’t know that much about the history of the team and their uniforms prior to 1961, but the uniform Banks is wearing looks like a throwback to a time earlier than his debut in 1955.

Great card, true vintage!!!

  1. It is a great card! The uniform he’s got is what the Cubs home unis looked like through 1956. The familiar pinstripes and rounded C hat debuted in 1957.
