New York Yankees Aquire Seattle Mariners All-Star Ichiro Suzuki

From The New York Daily News

SEATTLE – Joe Girardi planned to watch his pitchers face Ichiro Suzuki this week in Seattle. Instead, he will be writing his name into the Yankees’ lineup.

The Yankees acquired the 38-year-old outfielder Monday, sending righthanders D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to the Mariners for the former American League Most Valuable Player. The Yankees also received cash from the Mariners in the deal.

Ichiro, a 10-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner, is having the worst year of his career for the last-place Mariners, hitting .261 with a .288 on-base percentage and a .353 slugging percentage. He has four home runs, 28 RBI and 15 stolen bases, leading the American League with five triples.

It’s unclear how the Yankees plan to use Ichiro, as he’ll fit into the mix with Raul Ibanez and Andruw Jones.

Ichiro is in the final year of a five-year, $90 million deal. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Mitchell appeared in three games with the Yankees this season, throwing 4 2/3 innings out of the bullpen. He’s 6-4 with a 5.04 ERA in 15 games at Triple-A Scranton.

Farquhar was claimed off waivers by the Yankees from the A’s on June 26.
