Eric Davis 1986 Topps
A lot of people don’t care for the 1986 Topps baseball card design.
I think that the set is a very nice looking set, and while it may lack some of the great graphic elements that make the 1983, 1984, and 1987 designs very popular amongst card collectors, ’86 offers a very crisp and clean look.
Have a look at Eric Davis’ card from the set:
I told you, very clean and neat. I often refer to this set as ‘The Stencil Set’ due to the team name that appears at the top of the card.
My lone issue with the 1986 Topps design is the lack of creativity used with the player name. To me it simply looks like Arial, in 14pt. font, in CAPS.
Still, I would say that among the major brands that released cards in 1986, Topps was king!!!

I never had too many 86 Topps cards but I always kind of liked the design. I don’t think I’ve ever even seen this Eric Davis one. Nice pickup.
moe.
Thanks Moe.
I think that the 86 set is an underrated one. If it had a truly legendary card in it like the ones before and after it, I think the whole thing would be more widely collected.
For many years, I didn’t like the 1986 Topps baseball set. But over the years, I’ve grown to like it. You’re completely right… it’s clean and neat. And it’s perfect for autographs.
Last weekend, I picked up a box for $10 at a card show. It’s the last thing my collection needs since I already have a hand collated set, but I just couldn’t walk away. One of these days, I’ll relive my childhood and bust the box in search for a gem mint Vince Coleman rookie and possibly one of these Eric Davis 2nd year cards.
Fuji- very cool, good luck to you!
It’s too bad that the set doesn’t have a card that helps make it more collectible like the 84, 85, and 87 sets…
I hope you pull a Coleman!!
Have you ever looked at the Tony Perez card from this set? My buddies and I considered this to be an Eric Davis card.
