Million Dollar Question – ‘When I Say 1988 Score, You Think What Card’???
Last week was a lot of fun as we examined the 1981 Topps baseball card set. I asked what card you thought of first when you heard the words ’1981 Topps’ and the answers were great.
So, I will continue with this theme for a few more weeks to see what other great memories we can conjure up from our youth that was packed with baseball cards.
This time around we will look at the 1988 Score baseball card set – a ’30-YOC’ favorite.
1988 marked Score’s debut into the hobby with its brightly colored borders and great action pictures. The cards also featured full-color backs and packs included small, 2×2 holograms that contained baseball trivia. Collecting Score baseball cards in 1988 was a lot of fun.
And many of the cards from the set are memorable.
But, when it comes down to it – there is one card from this set that stands apart from the rest for me.
That card is the Gregg Jefferies rookie card.
Here it is:
When the set was released, Gregg Jefferies was one of the biggest prospects in the sport. Being on the Mets only amplified his status and he quickly became a highly sought afterrookie baseball card.
Jefferies had rookie cards in both the Fleer and Donruss sets from 1988, but this card from the Score set captured him perfectly. And the Gold border with the ‘Rookie Prospect’ headline stands apart from the rest – Big Time!!!
So, how about you? What is the most notable card you cam think of when you think of the 1988 Score set?
I cannot wait to hear this!!! And I’ll probably have to reveal my second place finisher from this set as well… Stay tuned for that.
