Dale Murphy 2003 Topps Tribute ‘First All-Star Season’

Dale Murphy 2003 Topps Tribute ‘First All-Star Season’

Forget that this card celebrating Dale Murphy’s first All-Star selection is featuring a posed portrait and check out that vintage Braves uniform he’s sporting!!!

VINATGE MURPHY

Gotta love baseball from the 1980′s!!!  I love looking back and seeing the uniforms, hats, hairstyles, and everything else that brings me to the time when I was first introduced to major league baseball.

I watched so many games that Murphy starred in – it was insane.  As a kid WTBS was my favorite channel due to the NWA Wrestling and Atlanta Braves games that it televised.  And while I don’t specifically recall this uniform style, it is pretty clear, due to the picture of a young Murphy, that this was taken during the early stages of his playing days.

Topps Tribute, Thanks for re-kindling the memories!!!

Happy Birthday Dale Murphy!!

Happy Birthday Dale Murphy!!

Dale Murphy turns 57 years old today.

One of my favorite players as a kid, Murphy’s retirement in 1993 was the start of seeing some of my idols leave the sport of baseball.

My memories of watching Dale Murphy play are endless.  Being a fan of the sport, and having no ‘home’ team to cheer for in Florida during my childhood, I drifted to the teams I was able to watch on television.  WTBS, WGN, and WOR game me my baseball fix.  And of the guys that I drifted towards – Murphy was prominent.

His skills as a player were endless.  Whether it was delivering home runs or making incredible plays in the outfield, Dale Murphy was one of the best players in the game for more than a decade – and I enjoyed watching all of it!!

Happy Birthday Mr. Murphy!!

Dale Murphy 2011 Topps – ’60 Years Of Topps’ – 60YOT Back

Dale Murphy 2011 Topps – ’60 Years Of Topps’ – 60YOT Back

It has been way too long since I featured a baseball card of Dale Murphy on this blog – 5 months to be precise.

So, let’s jump right into this one.  It is from the 2011 Topps set, and it comes from their ’60 Years Of Topps’ subset.  The card is a reprint of Murphy’s 1988 Topps base card, and it has the standard ’60 Years Of Topps’ back.

Have a look:

I like the set.  I like it a lot!

I just wonder how they chose which player was used for which year’s reprint.  Sure Murphy belongs, but it seems more fitting to include him in 1982 or 1983 versus 1988.  For 1988, I would have gone with Orel Hershiser or Jose Canseco.

Still, a great looking card and a nice addition to my Dale Murphy collection.

2008 Donruss Threads ‘Generations’ Starring Hank Aaron & Dale Murphy

While their career numbers are not comparable, the fear that both Hank Aaron and Dale Murphy put into their opponents is.

Both of these great players were offensive threats that had few contemporaries while they were dominating the National League.

It’s nice to see the two of them paired together on this same card.  And I have to say that this pairing is much better than some of the others that I have seen in more recent baseball card releases…

If I had to name my favorite Braves players of all-time, these two would rank very high on my list.  Hey, that could be a future feature for my ’30-YOC Top Ten’…

Stay tuned for that!!

On this day in 1993, 2-time MVP Dale Murphy retired from the sport of professional baseball.

Dale Murphy 2001 Topps Archives

Dale Murphy 2001 Topps Archives

My favorite part about the 2001 Topps Archives baseball card set is that it honors the player’s rookie season.

And it also gives us the option of seeing and collecting an ‘alternate’ version of a player’s rookie card.

But, what Topps did with any of the originals that featured multiple players is a bit on the ‘easy’ side if you ask me…

All they did was cut and crop and recycle.

They did it for Andre Dawson.  They did it for Johnny Bench.  The did it for Mike Schmidt.

And they did it for Dale Murphy too.

Have a look:

King of a cheap way out, but as a player collector, I will take it!!!

Happy Birthday Dale Murphy!!

Dale Murphy 2004 Playoff ‘Tools Of The Trade’

Dale Murphy 2004 Playoff ‘Tools Of The Trade’

During a recent trip to the last baseball card store within close proximity to my house, I picked up a new card for my Dale Murphy collection.

Typically, I use the store just for my supplies as their assortment of cards is wildly unorganized.

Still, sometimes unorganized can be a good thing – especially for a collector like me who enjoys the chase…

So, along with some supplies, I dove into a bargain box.  I brought home a few cards, eight in total.

One of those cards was this one:

I love me some Dale Murphy.   And I love me some ‘Tools Of The Trade’ baseball cards.  There was no way that I was not going to bring this bad-boy home!!!

The price tag – $0.25!!!

And she is serial numbered as 23/150 too.

Atlanta Braves Campaigning To Get Dale Murphy Into Hall Of Fame

Atlanta Braves Campaigning To Get Dale Murphy Into Hall Of Fame

By Mark Bowman, MLB.com

ATLANTA — Bobby Cox, Phil Niekro, Pete Van Wieren and many of the most respected figures in Atlanta Braves history have long said they believe Dale Murphy belongs in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

With Murphy scheduled to be on the Hall of Fame ballot just two more times, Braves president John Schuerholz has intensified the efforts to campaign for one of his organization’s most beloved figures. Schuerholz has sent a letter to Hall of Fame voters and other members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America asking them to take a closer look at Murphy’s credentials.

Murphy won back-to-back National League Most Valuable Player Awards in 1982 and ’83 and was just one of six players during the 1980s to record 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season (’83). He won five Gold Glove Awards, four Silver Slugger Awards and earned seven All-Star selections.

Murphy’s supporters have continued to point out that he led all Major League outfielders during the 1980s in home runs (308) and RBIs (929). He ranked second among outfielders during this span in hits (1,553) and extra-base hits (596).

But Murphy’s candidacy has seemingly been hindered by his .265 lifetime batting average, which was damaged during some unproductive years late in his career. He hit .289 from 1982-87, and batted .238 from ’88 until the end of his career in ’93.

Murphy was included on 12.6 percent of the ballots cast this past year. This was .9 percent higher than he drew in 2010. Players need to receive at least five percent of the votes to remain on the ballot the following year.

This will be the 14th time that Murphy’s name has appeared on the Hall of Fame ballot. If not elected after 15 years, players are removed from the ballot and their candidacy rests in the hands of voting conducted by the Veterans Committee.

Below is Schuerholz’s letter:

Dear Hall of Fame Voter:

As you prepare to vote for the National Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012, please accept this letter in support of Dale Murphy.

The Atlanta Braves organization is extremely proud of Dale’s outstanding accomplishments during an extraordinary 18-year Major League career, 15 of which were spent with the Braves.

Not only on the field, but off the field as well, Dale represented himself and the city of Atlanta with the class and professionalism consistent with the ideals of Major League Baseball and the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Even today, he continues to be one of our game’s greatest ambassadors.

On the following two pages, please review Dale’s remarkable accomplishments produced over what the Braves family feels is a Hall of Fame career. On behalf of our organization and Dale individually, I thank you for your consideration.
