1986 Fleer Superstar Special with Darryl Strawberry & Tim Raines
What can I say, this is a card featuring two of my favorite players from my favorite baseball era – the 1980’s!!
The card’s theme is ‘Instant Offense’ and I don’t know if a better title could have been established for these two All-star players.
Both Strawberry and Raines were multi-faceted players whose offensive skills were some of the best in the league. With blazing speed, home run power, and great control at the plate, there was nothing that these guys couldn’t do to ignite offense!!!
Another great card in my Darryl Strawberry player collection has found a new home!!!

1989 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice Darryl Strawberry
I am in no way able to criticize art. My 3-year old son’s art skills surpassed my abilities quite some time ago.
I can, however, provide you with my opinion on what I find visually appealing, and this card from the 1989 Upper Deck set makes the cut!!
While I have no intention of bashing the artist or artists behind the Donruss Diamond Kings work, I personally find the work issued by Upper Deck to be more superior. Coming from a vintage guy that grew up hoarding Diamond Kings, that says a lot!!!
Thoughts?? Opinions???

While kind of an ‘oddball’ card, this one still gets the job done of celebrating Darryl’s ability to remain at an All-star caliber level.
The card itself is rather boring so I thought I would present a few suggestions as to how this one can easily be improved.
Here goes:
- Use the Mets team colors – Substitute the Yellow pinstriping for the famous Orange that is part of the Mets logo.
- Update all of the fonts to a more creative and appealing look. Of the current words on the card, the best design goes to the word ‘Baseball’. Adopt this same philosophy with all of the card’s words and make them pop, not blend.
- Pictures tell a million words – this one fails us. Use a picture of Darryl that shows us why he is an All-star. Give me a home run swing or a stolen base or an assist in the outfield.
There you go. 3 suggestions as to how this Darryl Strawberry All-star card could be turned into an All-Star card of Darryl Strawberry!!!

1986 Topps Darryl Strawberry
When I see this card of Darryl Strawberry warming up in the outfield, I hear a loud-mouthed fan behind me yelling ‘DARRRYYYLLLLL!!!!’ over and over again…
Very few players drew emotions out off the fans the way that Strawberry did. Partly because he was so dominant and partly because he enjoyed toying with the fans, the infamous ‘Darryl’ chant is now legendary in ballparks across America!!!

1989 Fleer Darryl Strawberry
I like this card. The 1989 Fleer set was not very popular, but like many of the late 80’s issues from Fleer, these cards look good for certain teams and terrible for others.
For the Mets, these cards look great! The dark grey design works well with the Mets’ team colors. And the white pinstriping adds a nice baseball element to the card.
The picture of Darryl looks great - and my only issue would be that they cut away the top of the barrel of Darryl’s bat to make the picture fit. Normally I would complain loudly about this, but since the Mets’ logo is in the upper-right corner, and it looks great there, I will let it slide.
Another great addition to my Darryl Strawberry player collection!! YES!!!

1988 Donruss – MVP Bonus Card
When I look at this card, I get the impression that Darryl was just chilling out, minding his own business. Someone yells ‘Hey Darryl’ and he slowly turns his head to see who has called his name.
The result was captured on film…

What a terrible card. This subset by Donruss was supposed to capture each and every team’s MVP. It’s an honor to be awarded that title, and Donruss did a poor job in finding a good photo to celebrate the occasion. The photo should have been one of the best that they could find, and instead they gave us this…
Donruss’ photo editor should have lost his job over this one!!

I pulled this card from one of my 1989 Topps pack breaks. Immediately it went into a plastic sleeve and then a top-loader for safe keeping!!
This card features Darryl Strawberry and proclaims him as a Mets team leader.
The card celebrates Darryl’s incredible 1988 baseball season – a season in which he elevated his game to elite status. In ‘88 Darryl put together an incredible display of offense firepower. With 29 stolen bases, 27 doubles, 39 home runs, 101 runs scored, and 101 RBI, Darryl Strawberry solidified himself as one of the game’s greatest offensive weapons.
At the end of the year, Straw finished in second place for the National League’s MVP award and also won his first Silver Slugger award. He also celebrated making his 5th of 8 total All-star teams.
Very nicely done!! And a great looking card too!!!

Being a player collector is hard work. Being a player collector of players that are no longer active may be ever harder.
Luckily, I enjoy the challenge!!!
When it comes to obtaining cards for my player collections, I have been able to secure cards in a vast number of ways. Trades, baseball card shows, baseball card stores, and through Ebay auctions have been tools I have used to build my collections.
But the #1 way I have been able to build these up is through www.sportlots.com. This website has offered me a very affordable, organized, and easy way to find the cards I crave. While Ebay may be fancier with its hi-res images and powerful buying tools, I find most of the singles on Ebay to be over-priced. Sportlots.com offers a different and somewhat tougher shopping experience but the result is saving quite a bit of money while also finding cards in a more organized manner.
Here is my latest purchase from 3 different sellers on the site.

In this stack of 51 cards, I have been able to take some big bites into my current player collections. We have Eddies, Darryls, Palmers, Madduxs, and of course Dawsons!!
As a result of this purchase, I’ve got a bit of organizing to do as well as some player checklists to update.
If you haven’t checked out their site, I suggest logging onto www.sportlots.com to see the shopping experience that they offer. It’s not for everyone, but it certainly works for this player collector!!!
**Hat-tip tp Brad from Rickey Henderson Collectibles for advising me to check out this site as I was building my now completed Rickey Henderson collection. Thanks Brad!!!

My collection has really started to take shape over the last few months. And if you had asked me 1 year ago what I collected and why, I would not have been able to supply you with a good answer.
But now, things have changed quite a bit. My answer is simple – ‘I am a player collector’. And I am proud of it!!! I choose to pay homage to the guys that mean something to me. While some were the sport’s biggest stars, that doesn’t matter to me. Give me the guys that made an impact on me during my youth. Give me the guys I heard stories about while growing up that still remain in an elevated status in my heart. I’ll take the hustler that would stretch a double into a triple. I want the guys that will get back on the mound with the same fire and energy when their team is trailing as if they were winning.
Since starting this blog and getting back into the hobby I have completed 3 player collections – Andre Dawson, Rickey Henderson, and Dave Winfield. My Fergie Jenkins collection is just 3 cards away from joining that group as well. And my Eddie Murray, Darryl Strawberry, Greg Maddux, Billy Williams, and Jim Palmer collections are coming along very nicely!!!
Oh, and I am also a lover of the autograph. And while my technique may not be conventional, it works for me!! I enjoy the entire TTM process and look to get back into that part of the hobby very shortly. And my autographed baseball collection has grown by leaps and bounds too – now sitting at 15 great-looking pieces!!!
Lastly, I have gotten back into reading about this sport and it’s great players. While doing so I have become a follower of the book tour. And in the last year, I have picked up signed books by Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins(2), Darryl Strawberry, Johnny Bench, and Ron Santo.
Here is what my entire collection looks like today:

While nowhere close to the size of many of my fellow collectors, quantity is not my goal. I want and hope to obtain a very specific and concise collection.
I hope you agree that I am well on my way!!!! Thanks.

To say that I have attacked my 4 newest player collections is a bold yet true statement. It has been a ton of fun going after these guys, and it has been equally enjoyable to look back at some of the amazing things these baseball superstars did during their major league baseball careers.
I thought this would be a good time to review where I have come from since I took on the challenge of collecting the following:
- Jim Palmer – All major brand issues from his playing days
- Darryl Strawberry – All major brand issues from his days with the New York Mets
- Greg Maddux – All major brand issues from his first stint with the Chicago Cubs
- Eddie Murray – All major brand issues from his days with the Baltimore Orioles
Ok, on to the numbers…

Stay tuned as I look to make some big dents in these player collections over the next few weeks. I’ll keep you updated each, and every step of the way!!!!
