1988 HEADLINE: Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser Wins Cy Young Award With Unanimous Vote

1988 HEADLINE: Dodgers’ Orel Hershiser Wins Cy Young Award With Unanimous Vote

On this date in 1988, Orel Hershiser captured the National League’s Cy Young award in a unanimous vote.

Taking all 24 first-place votes, this award capped an unbelievable season for the right-hander.

A close look at the numbers:

23-8 during the regular season with 15 complete games and 8 shutouts.  In 267 innings of work, Hershiser compiled a low ERA of just 2.25.  His dominant year led to another selection to the National League All-star team and his first Cy Young Award.  During the playoffs, Hershiser led the Dodgers to the World Series championship while winning both the NLCS and World Series MVP awards in the process!!

Happy Anniversary Mr. Hershiser!!!

Happy Birthday Orel Hershiser!!!

Happy Birthday Orel Hershiser!!!

It is amazing to think that today Orel Hershiser is 55 years old today!!!  It makes me feel older just thinking about it…

Hershiser will be remembered most for his outstanding 1988 season.  With 23 wins, 15 complete games, and a Gold Glove award, he was the unanimous choice for the National League’s Cy Young award.  Orel led the Los Angeles Dodgers into the playoffs that season as well.  In the National League championship series, Hershiser pitched in 4 of the 7 games and earned the NLCS MVP award.  In the World Series against the heavily favored Oakland Athletics, Hershiser again dominated 2 games and won the World Series MVP award.

His most notable individual accomplishment may be the 59 straight innings pitched without giving up a single run during the 1988 season.  This record still stands today and should remain in tact for quite some time.

Hershiser enjoyed some success after leaving the Dodgers in 1994.  He was a big part of the Cleveland Indians pitching crew that took the Indians to the 1997 World Series.  But for me, and many others, Orel Hershiser will always be remembered as a LA Dodger.  And in the last year of his career in the majors, 2000, Orel returned to LA but was nowhere near as effective as he was during his first stint with the club.

Happy Birthday Orel Hershiser!!!

Orel Hershiser 2003 Donruss Signature Series – ‘Legends Of Summer’

Orel Hershiser 2003 Donruss Signature Series – ‘Legends Of Summer’

I picked up this card for just $0.18 on a recent splurge with Sportlots.com.  And while I really have no intent of adding modern cards of Orel Hershiser to my completed set that contains every major-branded card from his days with the Dodgers, this one had my intrigued a bit…

Here is the card:

Serial numbered as 205/250, I have become a fan of this set.  The set honors some fantastic baseball players, many of which I enjoyed watching as a kid.

Oddly enough, the cards that I have scored from this set feature players that not only were ‘Legends Of Summer’ but also could be tagged as ‘Heroes Of Fall’.  Examples of that would be Jim Palmer, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, and now added to that list, Orel Hershiser.

Enjoy.

Happy Anniversary Orel Hershiser!!!

Orel Hershiser 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

Orel Hershiser 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites

This is the first card of Orel Hershiser that I have picked up since completing my ‘Player Collection’ a few months back.

And while I did not intentionally wait a specific amount of time before going after Orel again, I am very happy to add this quality card to my expanding collection.

Issued by Topps in 2004, the card comes from their ‘All-Time Fan Favorites’ set and it is patterned after the 1988 Topps base design.

A great fit – I have to pose this question:  Was there a better pitcher in the sport of baseball during the 1988 baseball season than Orel Hershiser??

I think not!!!

Signing Results: 1988 Mr. Everything – Orel Hershiser

Signing Results:  1988 Mr. Everything – Orel Hershiser

Taking way much longer than what I had expected, I signed up for a rare signing with Orel Hershiser that was supposed to occur late in the summer of 2010.

Hershiser is like an elusive animal – hard to catch, and oftentimes leaves you catching just a glimpse but never long enough to snap a picture.

So, I waited.  And waited.  And waited some more.

Through the end of the 2010 baseball season.  And through a broken arm, rehab, and bad timing – I waited….

Well, the wait paid off, as it usually does, and now I have signed baseball number 45 in my collection.

And it is signed brilliantly by 1988’s Mr. Everything – Orel Hershiser.  I opted for the 1988 NL CY inscription, and now that I see the ball, I wish that I went for a 1988 CY, NLCS MVP, WS MVP inscription.

But beggars cannot be chosers, and I am just thrilled to finally get this ball home.  It had been a very long time, but the result is absolutely worth the wait.

See for yourself…

I told ya!!

Signed perfectly by one of the pitchers that captivated me during my youth, this baseball marks the entire 1988 baseball season for me.  A season that I will never forget thanks to ‘The Bulldog’!!!

My Orel Hershiser ‘Fab 5′ – Card #1

My Orel Hershiser ‘Fab 5′ – Card #1

Now that my Orel Hershiser player collection is complete I wanted to take the time to show off my favorite 5 cards from this set.

Card #1 – 1993 Donruss

Simply stated, this card is bad-ass!!!

A perfect picture that is rarely seen on a sports card, this shot shows us exactly what the hitter, catcher, and umpire see right before Hershiser got into his wind-up.

And with what appears to be a very relaxed body, it’s amazing how quickly and powerfully Orel would turn that body into a pitching machine that could dominate hitters like few others could.  His ‘bulldog’ persona and ability to intimidate hitters with his array of pitches made Hershiser one of the game’s great pitchers for the better part of half of a decade.

And if I were looking at this when I was at the plate, my knees would buckle a bit too.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my Orel Hershiser ‘Fab 5′.  I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did sharing it!!
