I’m Going To A Baseball Card Show This Weekend.

This will be my second show since I have jumped back into the hobby.  Since I didn’t really know what to expect from my first show I am doing a little more preparation this time around.

I have been updating my player collection lists and will bring these with me in hopes of buying some cards that I have been unable to find on Ebay at an affordable price.

I am really hoping that the guy from the last show that had 6 tables full of vintage cards is there again as I have found a few Billy Williams cards that I did not know existed that I want to try to purchase them.

I am also curious to see if anyone has any packs from the 1980’s for sale.  I have the urge to rip open a few packs, but don’t want to attempt this with any modern day cards.

Most importantly, I want to look around.  I think that is what I miss most about collecting during the 1980’s.  I don’t have the local baseball card store to spend a few hours in just looking at the new stuff.  Gone are the fifty cent packs of Topps, Fleer, Donruss, and Score cards stacked next to each cash register at the local pharmacy.  I miss actively seeking out cards.  Ebay is a great and powerful tool, but as a collector and someone that admires design and style elements of baseball cards, I want to see them in person up close.  I don’t want to have to rely on a scanned image for each one of my purchases; I want to see the real thing!!!

So that is what I am going to do.  And I’ll be sure to bring my camera along to capture what I can of this show.

Stay tuned for my review sometime after this weekend!!!

1978 Topps Reggie Jackson – Record Breaker

I LOVE this card.  It’s the reason that Reggie earned the nickname ‘Mr. October’.

I am the proud owner of 2 of these bad boys….

Patience & Bad Luck Pay Off… Sometimes….

I had been going through a pretty bad stretch of Ebay luck over the last few weeks.  I found some great auctions, but for one reason or another, I was outbid on almost all of them at the last minute.

3 weeks ago, I found a seller selling a lot of 5 Fergie Jenkins autographed baseball cards.  I jumped at this, and quickly added it to my ‘Watch’ list so I wouldn’t lose out on this opportunity.  I’ve seen some pretty sweet lots of autographd cards, but I had never seen one that was this appealing to me.

Strike 1 – I lost this auction in the last few seconds.  Unfortunately my high bid was not high enough.

Strike 2 – Amazingly enough, this seller listed the same auction again.  I was ready this time and had 2 browser sessions opened up in hopes of being able to react to any last minute bids.  Nope, that plan didn’t work either as I was again outbid at the last second.

Unbelievably, this same seller had another 5-card lot up for auction.  I cannot even begin to describe how happy I was to see these and knew it was ‘make it or break it’ time for me.  For some reason the view counts were terribly low this time and I was able to ‘steal‘ this auction with very little competition.  My final high bid was not even needed as I was able to get this auction for well under what the previous 2 sold for.

I got all of this for $7.50 ….

Happy Birthday Dave Winfield!!!

That’s right, the big guy turns 57 years old today.

Dave Winfield has always been one of my favorite players.  There was nothing that he couldn’t do as a player and is one of the most complete players from his generation.

Think about this, Dave Winfield was such an excellent athlete that he was drafted to play in the 3 major sports – professional baseball, professional football, and professional basketball!!!  Truly Amazing!!!!

Dave Winfield is sport’s best version of a ‘Renaisance Man’.
