Christmas Eve Traditions…

Tradition – the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, esp. by word of mouth or by practice: a story that has come down to us by popular tradition.

We all have traditions.  Some are done unconsciously and some are worked on to ensure perfect execution.

For me, I have 2 Christmas Eve traditions.

Tradition #1 – You get to open anything that is in your stocking.  My wife and I started this tradition between the 2 of us during our first Christmas as a married couple.  We, like many others, had family plans the following day and wanted to have a special memory to share as a couple.  So, we chose to buy medium-to-large size stockings and anything that was hanging in them by X-mas Eve was to be opened just with the 2 of us present.  When my first son was born in the summer of 2006, we passed this tradition on to him and got him his own stocking which was loaded with gifts for the 3 of us to share.  And then just a few months ago, our second son was born and now he will partake in these same traditions this year.

Traditions can be meaningless or have a large sense of importance.  It all depends on what you are willing to put into it.  This tradition may sound silly to some, but now our 4-member family will continue it and at some point in our sons’ lives we hope that they continue it as well.

Tradition #2 – I have to watch ‘A Christmas Story’.  Yep, the entire movie in one sitting.  I know it’s on for 24 hours in a row, and I will probably end up watching bits and pieces of it throughout the entire marathon, but I have to watch the whole movie on Christmas Eve.  I cannot tell you when this tradition started.  What I can tell you is that it is a hell of a lot of fun!!!  I have always enjoyed this movie, but I still am unable to pinpoint why that is.  No famous actors, no sexy girls, no blood and guts.  Just incredible story telling!!!  The laughs are endless and even though you know full well what scenes are next the effect in my house is always the same – HILARITY!!!!

There are way too many classic scenes in this movie for me to select a favorite to show you, but this get the job done.

So, sit back with your loved ones on Christmas Eve and enjoy your time together.  Oh, and don’t forget to drink your Ovaltine!!!!

Mail Day Courtesy Of “Night Owl”

The generosity of the blogger never fails to reassure me that we are a great group of entertaining and thoughtful people.  With so many new blogs popping up weekly in our little community, it has become harder and harder to remember what everyone collects.  With that being said, I received a nice 5-card package from Greg at ‘Night Owl Cards’ last night that perfectly mix with my player collections…

On to the cards:

1988 Topps Yankees Team Leaders featuring Dave Winfield and Willie Randolph.  This takes my Winfield collection needs down to just 4 cards…

1989 Topps Box Bottom of Rickey Henderson and a 1982 Topps Oakland Athletics Team Leader card with Rickey Henderson and Steve McCatty.

1982 Topps and 1982 Fleer Fergie Jenkins.  I am now very close to having all of Fergie’s cards issued during the 1980’s….  The 70’s will be tougher to get but I am certainly up to the challenge.

So a special ‘Thank You’ goes out to ‘Night Owl Cards’ for these great additions to my collection.  Your generosity is appreciated and has gotten me closer to my ultimate goal of completing these player collections.

Thanks Greg!

Mark Grace TTM Success – YESSSS!!!!

You may recall that I sent a baseball card to Mark Grace months ago c/o the Arizona Diamondbacks.  The card was returned to me signed beautifully by ‘Gracey’ but it had been damaged in the mail.  Although I was extremely happy with the autograph I didn’t want to ‘feature’ a damaged card in my collection.

So, I tried again.  This time I sent the card to Grace’s home address.  And just 41 days later, this awesome signed card was at my house waiting for me!!!

SWEET!!!!!

This was the only 1988 Topps Traded rookie that I owned of Mark Grace, but I have always liked the ’88 design so I am really happy that he signed this for me.  I’ll have to replace the card in my small but meaningful Mark Grace collection, but it is certainly worth it to have finally obtained a great Mark Grace autograph in perfect condition!!!

And just a few days before X-mas makes it that much better!!!  Thanks Gracey!!!
