Tradition – the handing down of statements, beliefs, legends, customs, information, etc., from generation to generation, esp. by word of mouth or by practice: a story that has come down to us by popular tradition.
We all have traditions. Some are done unconsciously and some are worked on to ensure perfect execution.
For me, I have 2 Christmas Eve traditions.
Tradition #1 – You get to open anything that is in your stocking. My wife and I started this tradition between the 2 of us during our first Christmas as a married couple. We, like many others, had family plans the following day and wanted to have a special memory to share as a couple. So, we chose to buy medium-to-large size stockings and anything that was hanging in them by X-mas Eve was to be opened just with the 2 of us present. When my first son was born in the summer of 2006, we passed this tradition on to him and got him his own stocking which was loaded with gifts for the 3 of us to share. And then just a few months ago, our second son was born and now he will partake in these same traditions this year.
Traditions can be meaningless or have a large sense of importance. It all depends on what you are willing to put into it. This tradition may sound silly to some, but now our 4-member family will continue it and at some point in our sons’ lives we hope that they continue it as well.
Tradition #2 – I have to watch ‘A Christmas Story’. Yep, the entire movie in one sitting. I know it’s on for 24 hours in a row, and I will probably end up watching bits and pieces of it throughout the entire marathon, but I have to watch the whole movie on Christmas Eve. I cannot tell you when this tradition started. What I can tell you is that it is a hell of a lot of fun!!! I have always enjoyed this movie, but I still am unable to pinpoint why that is. No famous actors, no sexy girls, no blood and guts. Just incredible story telling!!! The laughs are endless and even though you know full well what scenes are next the effect in my house is always the same – HILARITY!!!!
There are way too many classic scenes in this movie for me to select a favorite to show you, but this get the job done.
So, sit back with your loved ones on Christmas Eve and enjoy your time together. Oh, and don’t forget to drink your Ovaltine!!!!
