In the ‘real world’ all of us would be thrilled to be making $390,000 a year. In the fantasy world of professional sports, that salary is well below the league average and is generally given to unproven, journeymen type players.
Every once is a while you get a player that makes that kind of salary, but his talent is on par with the stars of the team. That is exactly what the Florida Marlins had in Cody Ross. Ross is a ‘do-it-all’ type of player that does the little things to ensure his job in the big leagues continues. With a knack for clucth hitting and making spectacular defensive plays in the outfield, it was not odd to find Ross outshining his teammates(some of which make more than 10-times Cody’s Marlins salary). Cody’s salary in 2008 was $390,000. This year it has ballooned to $2.25 million. And although it is impractical to view sports salaries as a comperable wage to the rest of the professions we have chosen, I personally would love to get a 577% increase in my pay next year. And if I did, I would still be nowhere near(sadly) what the minimum salary in baseball is.
But with Ross, I cheer him on. He is the little guy. He is the fun one. He is the one that genuinely looks like he loves to play the sport and would probably be just as happy making little to no money at all while playing this game. What I think I like most about Cody is that he has not changed his style of play, his intensity, or his attitude about playing hard each and every night even though his bank account indicates that he has indeed ‘Made It’!!! Thank you Cody Ross. Thank you for keeping us smiling when baseball’s biggest stars continue to disappoint us. Thank you for playing the game like a kid when so many of today’s top players don’t treat the game properly. Thank you for playing through injuries, and slumps, and losing streaks. Thank you for showing us how much you care for and respect the game!!!
Cody Ross is my Florida Marlins MVP!!!
