1983 Topps Super Veteran – Nolan Ryan

What do you say about one of the greatest pitchers of all-time?  A guy that defined what the term ‘dominant pitcher’ means.

Simply stated, Nolan Ryan is a baseball legend.  A member of the 300 wins club.  The all-time leader with 5,714 career strikeouts.  7 no-hitters to his credit.  A World Series champion member of the 1969 New York Mets.  An 8-time all-star.  A Top-10 finisher for the Cy Young Award 8 times.

Nolan Ryan defines power pitching.  With perfect mechanics and a fastball that has been clocked at over 100 miles per hour, Ryan was awesome.  The funny thing is that as he aged, he got better.  His full-body strength and conditioning were so perfect that it allowed him to play until the age of 46.  And even at 46 he was good.  During his last season with the Rangers in 1993, Ryan was 5-5 in 13 games started while hurling 46 strikeouts.

  1. “The funny thing is that as he aged, he got better”.

Very true. Just like the newest contender for 300 wins, Randy Johnson. And why did the Big Unit get better? He claims it was all because of Nolan Ryan.

I seriously doubt I’ll ever see someone of Ryan’s caliber in my lifetime; the man was and is like no other player. I can sum up him in one word: AWESOME
