1986 Fleer Autographed Andre Dawson Card!!!

I received this card as part of my ‘Andre Dawson Grab Bag #2’.

The card is a signed and includes the inscription ‘103 Psalm’.  Not being a religious guy, I wanted to know what this meant so I surfed the web and found this:

1
Of David. 1 Bless the LORD, my soul; all my being, bless his holy name!
2
Bless the LORD, my soul; do not forget all the gifts of God,
3
Who pardons all your sins, heals all your ills,
4
Delivers your life from the pit, surrounds you with love and compassion,
5
2 Fills your days with good things; your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6
The LORD does righteous deeds, brings justice to all the oppressed.
7
His ways were revealed to Moses, mighty deeds to the people of Israel.
8
Merciful and gracious is the LORD, slow to anger, abounding in kindness.
9
God does not always rebuke, nurses no lasting anger,
10
Has not dealt with us as our sins merit, nor requited us as our deeds deserve.
11
As the heavens tower over the earth, so God’s love towers over the faithful.
12
As far as the east is from the west, so far have our sins been removed from us.
13
As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on the faithful.
14
For he knows how we are formed, remembers that we are dust.
15
Our days are like the grass; like flowers of the field we blossom.
16
The wind sweeps over us and we are gone; our place knows us no more.
17
But the LORD’S kindness is forever, toward the faithful from age to age. He favors the children’s children
18
of those who keep his covenant, who take care to fulfill its precepts.
19
The LORD’S throne is established in heaven; God’s royal power rules over all.
20
Bless the LORD, all you angels, mighty in strength and attentive, obedient to every command.
21
Bless the LORD, all you hosts, ministers who do God’s will.
22
Bless the LORD, all creatures, everywhere in God’s domain. Bless the LORD, my soul!

Personally, religion is a little much for me.  I know that Andre is devoted to his religion and I respect that about him – it’s just not my cup of tea…

Andre Dawson 2004 Leaf Certified Cuts

This is one of those cards that you cruise by when leafing through a nice big stack of cardboard.  Serial numbered 199/599, the card didn’t make a big impression on me during the first or second pass through a new stack of Dawsons I picked up.  But now, it has taken hold of me and I like it!!

The design is nice.  The card is shiny.  And Andre is at home at Wrigley Field.  What could be better???

Andre Dawson 2005 Donruss Diamond Kings – RED

It was just a matter of time before I added this guy to my player collection.  I already have a few of the base cards of this one, and now I have the ‘more limited’ Red one too!!

While I don’t mind parallel cards, I do want them to be special.  The Red foil that Donruss used for their logo on this card looks OK, but a Silver or Gold foil would have been incredible!!

Andre Dawson 2005 Donruss Throwback Threads – Player Timelines

This card’s concept is excellent.  Too bad it is incomplete!!!

I like what Donruss did here with their ‘Player Timelines’ set.  And while I am thrilled that they included Andre in the set, I would have liked to have seen just retired players showcased so their entire careers could be honored.  The card features the three logos of the teams that Andre played with up until 2004, but not having a Marlins logo present on a ‘timeline-esque’ card makes this one incomplete…

Andre Dawson 2001 Upper Deck Minor League – Denver Zephyrs

Great concept, terrible photo!!!

During the early part of the decade, card companies were pulling out all of their tricks to earn the spot as the hobby’s top brand.  Upper Deck had a great concept, but in my opinion it was just poorly executed.

Featuring players in their minor league uniforms is cool!  And for a player collector, an unusual card loke this becomes an instant ‘NEED’.  It’s just too bad that UD used such a crappy picture.  Although Andre was playing in the minor leagues during the mid-1970’s, I’m certain that better photos of him exist than this one…

Andre Dawson 2003 Donruss Timeless Treasures

Serial numbered 807/900, this card looks even better than the scan.  While most cards that mix color with Black & White fail, this one excels.  The bold image of ‘The Hawk’ leaps off of the card!!

And while I would normally find the bottom of this card yo be too busy, it works for this issue!

Andre Dawson 2006 Fleer Greats Of The Game – CUBS!!

I already owned this card as part of the Cubs set that I built earlier in the year.  As an obsessive player collector, I knew it was just a matter of time before I added one to my Dawson collection as well.

I love this card!!  From the Wrigley Field sign to the Ivy to the Cubs’ colors being used throughout – this set is one of my favorite issues of this decade!!!

Andre Dawson 2002 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts

This card has a strange vibe to it.  I don’t know what the artist was attempting to do, but the whole ‘yellow’ thing does not work for me.  I have become accustomed to Upper Deck providing us with photos that had the best color and clarity.  This card offers the opposite…

Still, it is another brand new card for my Dawson collection so I am a happy camper!!

Andre Dawson 1996 Leaf Preferred

Dawson looked pretty good in the Teal & White, huh??

This is one of my favorite cards of Andre wearing a Marlins’ uniform.  While lacking any major graphic elements, what elevates this card’s status is that the photo is crisp and superb.  And since Andre was not a full-time player while with the Marlins, most cards feature him in either boring old poses or just hanging out around the dugout…  It’s nice to see an action shot of ‘The Hawk’ getting in some playing time while on the last team he played for.

TTM Success: Bobby Thomson!!!

It took just 14 days for this nicely signed card of baseball hero Bobby Thomson to be returned back to me!!

Thomson is best known for his ‘Shot Heard Around The World’ and that is what this 2000 Topps Golden Moments card celebrates.

In 1951, the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Giants played a 3-game series to determine what team would advance on in the playoffs.  With the series tied at 1-game apiece, Thomson’s home run in Game 3 was the game winner and is widely recognized as one of the greatest home runs in baseball history.

Thank you Mr. Thomson for signing this card and making this incredible baseball moment a little more special for me!!
