My Fergie Jenkins ‘Fab 5′ – Card #2
Now that my Fergie Jenkins player collection is complete I wanted to take the time to show off my favorite 5 cards from this set.
Card #2 – 1969 Topps
1969 was supposed to the be the year of the Cubs. A powerful team, full of young stars and veteran talent, the Cubs were poised to win it all. Sadly, they did not. Yet many consider that ’69 team to be the most talented team that the Cubs ever had.
And Fergie Jenkins was a big part of the reason. Jenkins had a fabulous season in 1969. He started 42 games for the club, while going the distance in 23 of them. Fergie compiled a record of 21-15 that year which gave him three consecutive seasons of at least 20 wins. Throwing 311 innings, Jenkins allowed just 122 runs giving him a solid 3.21 ERA. He also struck out 273 batters while walking just 77, good for a 3.55 K:walk ratio.
