You’re Not Going To Believe What I Won!!!

You’re Not Going To Believe What I Won!!!

I listen to sports radio pretty much throughout the day.  If I am in the car or at work(with my IPhone), the radio is on.  And while South Florida has 3 or 4 options for sports radio entertainment, my choice is 790 – The Ticket.

The channel is full of fun hosts, and while they take sports seriously, they don’t overwhelm the airwaves with sports content every second of the day.  Instead they take a more light-hearted approach and add in pop culture, world news, and comedy to help the day flow.

Anyways, last week I got an email from the stations producer telling me that I had won a contest.  A few weeks prior I signed up for their email newsletter giving me access to contests and well as keeping me updated on their interview schedule.  Well, my email address was pulled and I won!!!

I made arrangements to pick up my prize.

And here it is:

A Bose Portable Sounddock system.

This thing is very sweet and appears to be a very top-of-the-line product!!  And while I love music, I don’t have and have never felt the need to own an IPod or MP3 player.  In fact, I have now had my IPhone for close to two months and I have yet to load a single song onto it.

So while I am thrilled to have won this incredible gift, I am leaning towards not keeping it for myself.  My wife had first dibs and she passed.  And with that out of the way, I think I am going to Ebay with it!!!

I’ll keep you updated.  I am thinking that it would be kind of fun to see what I can turn this Bose system into….  Maybe some baseball-related memorabilia or cards…  We’ll see….

Stay tuned.

My 1981 Topps Record Breakers Set Is Complete!!!

My 1981 Topps Record Breakers Set Is Complete!!!

I have to admit that of all of the subsets that I have assembled myself in the last year, this one was by far the easiest to complete.

When I decided to go after this one, I found one seller on www.sportlots.com that had all of the pieces I needed to get the job done.  So, after quickly throwing them into my cart, I soon had the set complete without breaking a sweat.

And what a set it is!!!

From Ozzie Smith to Pete Rose to Mike Schmidt to Johnny Bench to Steve Carlton.  The list goes on and on.

But the set stops here – COMPLETE!!!

Orel Hershiser 1989 Donruss – ‘Baseballs Best’

Orel Hershiser 1989 Donruss – ‘Baseballs Best’

Donruss struck Gold with this one!!!

For just a few short years, in the late 80’s and into the early 90’s, Donruss issued their ‘Baseball’s Best’ sets.  Rather large in size(300+ cards), the sets gave set builders a new challenge and the player collectors another card to go after of their favorites.

And oftentimes, the card in this set was better than the one from Donruss’ base version.  Like this card of Orel Hershiser…

I told you!!!  This is a great looking card, and it features a very rare kind of image.  When I say rare, it is not odd to find images of Hershiser on the pitching mound, but at this angle we get a pretty unique and different look.

And I love it!!!

Did You Know…

During his brief stay in Montreal, Pete Rose doubled against Philadelphia’s Jerry Koosman during the fourth inning of Montreal’s home opener on April 13, 1984, for his 4,000th career hit.  Rose’s milestone hit happened on the 21st anniversary of his first major league hit, a triple against Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Bob Friend on April 13, 1963, at Crosley Field.

Happy Birthday Mark Grace!!

Amazingly, Mark Grace turns 46 years old today!!

One of my favorite Cubs players of all-time, Mark Grace was so much fun to watch.  It’s not often that you get to witness watching a player have fun day in and day out during his playing days.  But with Mark Grace, that is exactly what you got!!

A guy with an incredible swing and defensive skills to match, Grace was an all-around baseball star.  While never the most celebrated player on his roster, Grace was certainly the most consistent.  His approach at the plate was consistent enough to yield him more hits than ANY other player in the decade of the 1990’s – WoW!!!

For Mr. Grace’s birthday I want to get him a flag.  Not just an ordinary, run-of-the-mill flag though…  I want this one to be special.  I want it to be White in color with Blue letters and numbers.  And while we’re at it, let’s slap his name and #17 on it and hang it from a pole in the outfield at Wrigley Field(a place Gracey called home for 13 amazing years)!!

Happy Birthday Gracey!!!
