1987 Topps Record Breakers – Card #1 – Roger Clemens

Headline – “The Rocket Throws Smoke Past 20 Baffled Batters”

Story – Boston, Mass., April 29, 1986:  Red Sox Roger Clemens tonight became the 1st pitcher ever to record 20 strikeouts in a 9-inning game.  He had at least one strikeout in each inning and fanned the side three times.  Of his 138 pitches, 97 were fastballs.

My take – Clemens was able to dominate so many hitters over the course of his length career.  But dominating teams is completely different.  And for me personally, it was on this night, very early in Roger’s career, that I knew he was different from most pitchers in the game.
