Wade Boggs 1986 & 1987 Donruss Jumbo All-Star Cards

Wade Boggs 1986 & 1987 Donruss Jumbo All-Star Cards

Hey, time for a nice ‘oddball’ for the Wade Boggs collection.

Make that two, actually…

The cards are from the ‘Jumbo’ sets from the 1986 and 1987 Donruss brands.

Take a look at the check swing by Boggs on his 1986 Donruss Jumbo – great work by the photographer to capture that moment at the plate!!!

Fergie Jenkins 2002 Topps Tribute ‘3000 Strikeouts’

Fergie Jenkins 2002 Topps Tribute ‘3000 Strikeouts’

Courtesy of my buddy Alfredo, I have a new Fergie Jenkins card to show off to you all.

This one, from the 2002 Topps Tribute set pays homage to Fergie being a member of the ‘3000 Strikeouts Club’.

One of the best pitchers of the last 50 years, Fergie is the lone member of the club to not allow more than 1,000 walks during his playing days.

I guess that we can officially call him the ‘Master Of Control’!!!

Here is the card:

Thanks again Alfredo.  And don’t forget to check out his blog – I am sure that you’ll find something you’d like in his ‘Trade Bait’.

Jim Palmer 2001 Topps Archives – Sweet!!!

Jim Palmer 2001 Topps Archives – Sweet!!!

Just a fantastic looking baseball card featuring one of my favorite pitchers of all-time, Mr. Jim Palmer!!!

1984 was Palmer’s last season in the big leagues.  He only competed in 5 games that season, going 0-3.

Still, the legacy remained in tact and he is absolutely the greatest pitcher in Baltimore Orioles history.  And when you stack up his numbers, team success, and individual awards, Palmer is certainly one of the greatest pitchers from his era as well!!

I am loving this card!!!

YES!!!!

Reggie Jackson 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites – Pop Quiz Time!!!

Reggie Jackson 2004 Topps All-Time Fan Favorites – Pop Quiz Time!!!

A very cool baseball card from a very cool set.

And as much as I would like to give you a great stat from Reggie’s time with the California Angels, I would rather give you a pop quiz.

First, let me show you the card:

Ok, now onto the quiz….

What is Reggie Jackson doing in this photo??

  1. Tipping his hat to the crowd during his last game in Anaheim
  2. Coming out for a curtain call after hitting a game-changing home run
  3. Looking for ladies
  4. Asking if someone lost their helmet
  5. playing ‘keep away’ from Ellis Valentine

OK, what’s it gonna be???  1, 2, 3, 4, or 5???

Dennis Eckersley 1984 Topps

Dennis Eckersley 1984 Topps

Perfect form by ‘The Eck’ on this one.

Just look at the follow-through of his pitching arm.

And, his front foot is pointed directly at home plate too.  Something tells me that this one had some serious heat on it!!!

In the small cameo, check out the ‘B’ on his cap.  Looks a little odd, kind of too high…  Do you think that this was airbrushed on by Topps???

And The Winner Of The ’30-YOC World Series Contest’ Is…

And The Winner Of The ’30-YOC World Series Contest’ Is…

Reivax!!!

We had 18 players in my ‘World Series Contest’.  Of them, only seven chose the St. Louis Cardinals as the eventual champions.  And of those 7 players, it was only Reivax who thought that the series would go 7 games!!!

Congratulations Reivax, you are the winner of these Willie Mays baseball cards:

I’ve sent you an email requesting your mailing address so I can ship out your prize.

Congratulations again.  And thanks to everyone that played!!!

And don’t worry, just because the baseball season is over, I will still be hosting a good amount of contests.  Stay tuned, and thanks for reading!!!

Congratulations To The 2011 World Series Champions, The St. Louis Cardinals!!!

Congratulations To The 2011 World Series Champions, The St. Louis Cardinals!!!

After 7 thrilling games, it is sad to see that one team has to lose, but that is what sport is all about.

And I have to say that this World Series was fantastic.  Loaded with drama, great action, horrible errors, and baseball heroics, I believe that this Fall Classic featuring the St, Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers will be one that we all fondly recall twenty years from now.

Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals on capturing the 11th championship in the team’s history!!!

Happy Birthday Fred Lynn!!!

Happy Birthday Fred Lynn!!!

Fred Lynn turns 60 years old today.

I have always had an affinity for Fred Lynn.  He broke onto the baseball scene in 1975 and took the sport by storm.  He did this during the year of my birth, and I have always enjoyed learning more about things that happened in 1975!!

Fred Lynn quietly put together a very solid 17-season career as a professional baseball player.  It’s amazing that someone playing for some of baseball’s most popular teams(The Red Sox and Orioles) could stay under the radar but Lynn was able to do so.  While media and fan attention went to his teammates, Lynn contributed solidly.  During his first full season in the major leagues in 1975, Fred Lynn won the Rookie of the Year award as well as the Most Valuable Player award.  Not too shabby, for a rookie huh???  I’d say that it’s rather impressive!!!

Happy Birthday Mr. Lynn!!

1961 Topps Chicago Cubs Team Card

1961 Topps Chicago Cubs Team Card

I told you a few weeks ago  that I was going to start focusing on my Billy Williams collection again.

And this is step #1.

While many will not consider the ‘team’ card worthy of a player collection, I do.  But only in the case of my Billy Williams collection.  You see, when I first started putting this set of cards together (more than three years ago) I felt that the checklist was lacking depth.  Being that Williams’ cards was limited to just releases from Topps, I decided to add all of the team cards to his checklist, giving me basically one more card per year to go after.

So, with that I present to you the 1961 Topps Chicago Cubs team card:

Since baseball cards are usually produced the season prior, it is very possible that Williams is not even pictured on this card.  There are three options to choose from, and I am going to have to put in some work to find out if indeed he is present in this photo.  1961 was Williams’ rookie campaign, so I am guessing he is here.

I’ll do some work and keep you posted!!

Randy Hundley 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Autographed Baseball Card!!

Randy Hundley 2006 Fleer ‘Greats Of The Game’ Autographed Baseball Card!!

I have always liked Randy Hundley.  Partly due to his being Fergie Jenkins’ favorite battery mate.  And partly due to his being the father of former big league catcher Todd Hundley.

Randy was there for all of that action with the Cubs during the 1960’s.  He starred right alongside Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Fergie Jenkins, and Ernie Banks!!

He saw it all!  And I am thrilled to add this signed baseball card to my collection!!!

You won’t believe what I paid for this one…
