A TRUE WHITE WHALE – 1966 Topps Billy Williams!!!

A TRUE WHITE WHALE – 1966 Topps Billy Williams!!!

I have been seeking this specific baseball card out since the late 1980s when I moved to Chicago from Florida.  And now, in 2012, I have finally added one to my collection.

And while I took a very lengthy break in collecting during the time between, I can finally say that this 25-year quest is over and a 1966 Topps Billy Williams card is mine.

The card is probably considered to be in VG condition, but I am ok with that.

Have a look:

To me, it is perfect – and I LOVE IT!!!

The card is a short print from the 1966 Topps set.  And when mint, these beauties sell for a pretty nice amount.

When I got back into collecting cards in 2008, I made finishing my Billy Williams collection one of my first goals.  Now, four years later, I am a bit closer to that realization.

I wanted to show you how well these sell – a lot of vintage collectors really like the 1960’s Topps short prints, and demand for quality cards is still very high.

Here is a look at some completed auctions for the same card:

Condition Date  Final Price
VGEX 4/2 $19.27
EX 3/31 $18.45
EXMT 3/26 $22.54
EX 3/25 $20.79
EXMT 3/24 $45.00
EXMT 3/24 $33.88
EXMT 3/16 $54.33

I think that I got a really good deal for mine as I paid just a shade over $13.00.

1977 Topps Montreal Expos Team Card – FAIL!!!

1977 Topps Montreal Expos Team Card – FAIL!!!

I was so excited to find this card at a very solid price.  And the condition is Ex/Mt too.

So, I broke out my magnifying glass and tried to identify Andre.

And while there are really only 3-4 options on that card that could be him, I was quickly worried that I did not find him because I could not see a ’10’ on any of the uniforms.

But Dawson was certainly on the 1977 squad – hell, he was the Rookie Of The Year.  He made his debut in 1976 with the team, and since it is apparent that this photo was taken during Spring Training, he has to be here…

Sweat began to drip from my brow, and my stomach started to bubble…

And then I looked at the back of the card and my suspicion was confirmed.

Andre Dawson is not listed as part of the checklist of the players featured on this card.

BUMMER!!!

Fred Lynn 2002 Topps American Pie – ‘American Sluggers’

Fred Lynn 2002 Topps American Pie – ‘American Sluggers’

I scooped up another card of Fred Lynn during a recent shopping spree on www.sportlots.com.

And while far from stellar, it does feature one of my favorite players from the Boston Red Sox!

And to be honest, the more that I learn about Lynn, and the more I review his stats, he is climbing my Red Sox ladder rather quickly.

Enjoy.

Dwight Gooden ‘Fab Five’ – Card #3 – 1988 Fleer Headliners

Dwight Gooden ‘Fab Five’ – Card #3 – 1988 Fleer Headliners

Now that my Dwight Gooden collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #3 – 1988 Fleer Headliners

I am a big fan of the 1961 Topps All-Star baseball card.  And while this ‘Headliners’ card from the 1988 Fleer baseball card set may be a rip-off of that same style, I like it!!

And Gooden certainly was a headliner – one of the best pitchers of the decade, Gooden burst onto the scene in 1984 and took the baseball and baseball card collecting world by storm.  And that storm had staying power – Gooden was supreme for the first three seasons of his career as he collected both team and individual award at a record-setting pace!!!

I love this card!!!

1982 Fleer ‘Big Red Machine’ Starring Dan Driessen, Dave Concepcion, And George Foster

1982 Fleer ‘Big Red Machine’ Starring Dan Driessen, Dave Concepcion, And George Foster

While the three players featured in this baseball card issued as part of the 1982 Fleer baseball cards set do not conjure of images and thoughts of the true ‘Big Red Machine’, I am happy to see that Fleer made the effort.

Have a look:

But, back in 1982 Johnny Bench was with the team still too – I wonder why he was left out…
