My New Player Checklists Have Been Built.  My Cards Are Organized.  It Is Time To S-H-O-P!!!

In case you missed it, a little less than two weeks ago I announced the next round of players that I was going to build player collections for.  If you wanted to re-visit that post, click here.

Well, I have finally gotten organized.  The checklists have been built.  The cards have been sorted and accounted for.

And now, there is just one thing left to do – SHOP!!!!

Oh, and if you happen to have any cards on my new ‘Player Collection’ checklist that I need for these new sets please let me know.

I am sure that we can work something out.

Hank Aaron 2011 Topps Marquee – Base

Man, these cards from the Topps Marquee brand a HOT!!!

Featuring crisp and clean photography, and mounted on a thick and sturdy cardstock, these cards look and feel very high-end.

The cards are so thick that they don’t fit in a regular top-loader either.  I am using a 100-pt. loader for this card; I usually need those for game-used relic cards and cards from the Topps Tribute set.

I have not seen this brand listed on the 2012 Topps product calendar.  In my opinion, as a player collector, it would be nice to see these come back.  And if they included Andre Dawson or Fergie Jenkins in the set, even nicer!

I have a handful of these cards of Andre Dawson from the 2005 Donruss Throwback Threads Studio Portraits set.

I’ve seen the Fergie Jenkins versions a bunch of times but never tried to grab any of them

Until now!!!

If you know this set, you know that it has multiple versions – mostly with different colored borders.

This one is serial numbered as 25/40 and it is the ‘Red’ version.

1968 Topps Game – Tommy Davis

Tommy Davis played in the big leagues for 18 seasons.  During that time, he suited up for ten major league teams. And he was a solid contributor for most of them.

Davis’ career numbers are pretty solid – .294 batting average, 2,121 hits, 272 doubles, 153 home runs, 811 runs scored, 1,052 RBI, and 136 stole bases.

Davis won two batting titles with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1962 ans 1963.  He was also an All-Star in those two campaigns. 

Davis’ Dodgers team won the World Series in 1963.  In the 4-game sweep of the Yankees, Davis hit .400 as he tallied 6 hits and 2 RBI in 15 at-bats.

Happy Anniversary Willie McCovey!!

On this day in 1959, Willie McCovey made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

And I have to say that McCovey did pretty well in his debut – he went 4-for-4 while collecting 2 triples and 2 singles.  Most importantly, the Giants beat the Pirates by a score of 7-2.

Back in ’59, who would have thought that ‘Stretch’ would go on to be a Hall of Famer with more than 500 home runs and 1,500 RBI on his resume.

Congratulations on a fantastic debut – and Happy Anniversary, Mr. McCovey!!!

ATLANTA — Roy Halladay struck out the 2,000th player of his career in the first inning in Sunday’s 6-2 loss to the Braves at Turner Field.

He struck out David Ross, which Halladay and catcher Carlos Ruiz thought was the third out of the inning, but home-plate umpire Gary Cederstrom ruled Ruiz did not catch the ball. As Halladay and Ruiz walked off the field, Ross went to first to keep the inning alive.

The right-hander, who was facing a bases-loaded jam after giving up two runs, escaped the threat by getting Paul Janish to pop out to Ryan Howard in foul territory.

Halladay, who spent seven weeks on the disabled list earlier this season, is the fourth active pitcher with 2,000 or more strikeouts, joining Andy Pettitte, CC Sabathia and Kevin Millwood.

“We made some changes mechanically,” said Halladay. “It’s going to take some getting used to, but pitch-wise, I thought there was better movement. The cutter was better. The curveball was better. It was a good step, but I need to keep working on it and be more consistent with it. I definitely felt like it was a step in the right direction; things were better.”

There are just 67 pitchers in baseball history with 2,000 or more strikeouts.

Chipper Jones Moves Past Pete Rose On The All-Time Extra Base Hits List

ATLANTA — With a solo home run in the third inning of the Braves’ 6-2 victory Sunday against the Phillies, Chipper Jones moved past Pete Rose and into second place on the all-time list of extra-base hits by a switch-hitter.

Jones now has 1,042 extra-base hits and trails only Hall of Famer Eddie Murray, who had 1,099 in his 21-year career.

Jones said it meant a lot to pass Rose, especially since Rose has 1,570 more hits than him.

“Pete had a lot of doubles, a lot of doubles,” Jones said. “It’s another one of those cool milestones when you sit back from the ballgame and just say, ‘Wow.'”

Jones has already become the all-time leader in career RBIs by a third baseman this season, passing George Brett.

Jones has 24 extra-base hits this season, including 10 home runs. Sunday’s home run moved Jones past Angels first baseman Albert Pujols into 32nd on the career home run list with 464. Jones is one behind Hall of Famer Dave Winfield.
