Ozzie Guillen 1986 Fleer ROOKIE CARD!!!

Ozzie Guillen 1986 Fleer ROOKIE CARD!!!

No, I do not have any plans of becoming an Ozzie Guillen collector.

But he is the skipper of my team, and I like what he brings to the squad as it relates to on-field experience as well as being able to cope with stressful situations.

In my opinion, Ozzie has not been ‘himself’ for much of the season.  Maybe he is not meeting with reporters as often as he used to in Chicago.  Or maybe, he is just not feeling like adding fuel to the fire of what appears to be a sinking ship…

Either way, I was able to scoop this card up very inexpensively.  It was an ‘add-on’ to a larger order that I placed with one of my favorite sellers on http://www.sportlots.com.

Have a look at a much thinner Ozzie from more than 25 years ago:

And while not a Sox fan, I certainly do love that old-school logo!!!

George Foster ‘Fab Five’ – Card #2 – 1982 Topps “In Action”

George Foster ‘Fab Five’ – Card #2 – 1982 Topps “In Action”

Now that my George Foster collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #2 – 1982 Topps ‘In Action’

I am a big fan of the ‘In Action’ baseball cards that Topps issued in both their 1972 and 1982 sets.  I am also very happy to see them make their return in the 2012 Topps Archives set too.

As for the card of Foster, it offers a great look at Foster’s high-arm batting stance right as he is preparing to tear into the pitcher’s offering.

Foster was as strong of a slugger as there was – and he could crush the ball as far as almost anyone in the league.

The only picture that Topps could have used that would have been better would be one of him in the follow-through of a swing that just connected and sent the ball soaring.

Rollie Fingers 1984 Fleer

Rollie Fingers 1984 Fleer

Whoa, just look at that beautiful mustache!!!!

If it was strong enough, and I believe that it is, I think you can put a quarter right in there and the mustache would frame it.

What do you think?

Mike Schmidt 2003 Fleer ‘Fall Classic’

Mike Schmidt 2003 Fleer ‘Fall Classic’

During his big league career, Mike Schmidt competed in 2 World Series match-ups.

In 1980, his Phillies team was victorious and won the title.  And in 1983, his team lost to the Baltimore Orioles.

While Schmidt is one of the most accomplished players from his era, he did not shine on the World Series stage.  In 11 games, Schmidt hit .220 as he collected just 9 hits in 41 at-bats.  Of his 9 hits, he connected for 1 home run, 2 doubles and 6 singles.  He drove in 7 runs in the 11 games, and scored six.

Far from a ‘flop’ Schmidt’s performance in World Series play is far from legendary too…

1984 Headline: Pete Rose Returns To Cincinnati!!!

1984 Headline: Pete Rose Returns To Cincinnati!!!

When this headline hit the papers 25+ years ago I am pretty certain that the feeling in the Cincinnati area was one of sheer joy!!!

A former baseball star was coming back to the city to once again play for and now manage the team that he helped become one of baseball’s greatest dynasties.

What a ride Pete took Reds’ fans on once he came back to the team.  From making history by becoming the game’s all-time hits leader to being banished from the game for gambling.

No matter how you look at it and how you feel about Pete Rose today, you must admit that this was a historic day for the sport back in 1984!!!

I May Not Have Attended ‘The National Sports Card Collectors Convention’ But That Doesn’t Mean That I Can’t Have A Few Souvenirs…

I May Not Have Attended ‘The National Sports Card Collectors Convention’ But That Doesn’t Mean That I Can’t Have A Few Souvenirs…

Yeah, I was not there.  But I do know that a lot of collectors were.  So, I lived vicariously through their blog stories, Facebook posts, and Twitter tweets.

And as the title of this post suggests, while I was not there in person, I was still able to scoop up a few collectibles from the show.

4 to be exact.

And they are cards produced by Leaf specifically for this convention.

And they are of my four favorite players.

On to the goodies!!!!

Reggie Jackson

Jim Palmer

Fergie Jenkins

Andre Dawson

Pretty nice haul, huh?

I am happy to see all of ‘My Guys’ included in this set.  And after reviewing the other cards in the set, I really wish that the Dawson was Black and White.  In my opinion, the B&W images really look great with the graphic elements that Leaf used on these.

Still, 4 great additions to my player collections!
