Andre Dawson 1989 Topps & LJN Toys – Baseball Talk Collection
For some reason, I don’t recall these cards as a kid. And after doing a little homework, it appears that the cards were played on some kind of hand-held device. Each card is oversized, more like the size of a postcard, and features an area that looks like a vinyl record. The cards are inserted into the player and you can then listen to the voices that were recorded for each.
I have no idea if these were just used for entertainment of if an actual game was played with the different cards. I was a pretty active collector in 1989, but for the life of me, I don’t recall this item at all…
The set did feature a card of Andre Dawson with the 1989 Topps design, and I recently found one on Ebay for $0.99. So, I had to buy it!!!
Here is the front of the card:
And here is the back:
You can see the ‘player’ part of the card above Andre’s stats.
Further research has revealed that Joe Torre, Mel Allen, and Don Drysdale did the voice work for this set/game. I wonder what they said about Andre…

Joe Morgan 2012 Topps Deckle Edge
I tell you what, if this set was full of legends of the past it would have been a candidate for a future subset that I would want to build. As a matter of fact, the set was on my list until I reviewed the checklist. Had it not been for Jose Bautista, Mike Napoli, Evan Longoria, and David Freese, I think that this one would have made the final cut. Nothing personal against those players, they are solid, but this set takes me back to an era of baseball that I love and I just don’t see the need to include those guys in it…
Instead, I will scoop up the players in the set that I enjoy.
And of course, that takes me to Joe Morgan!!
I was very happy to see Mr. Morgan featured in his old Houston Astros uniform. It is a very welcomed change of pace from all of the recent cards that I have grabbed of him wearing his Reds uniform.
Have a look:

Mike Schmidt 1984 Topps
The 1984 Topps design is one of my favorites from the decade of the 1980’s.
I like the basic design against the stark White background. The vertical lettering of the team name mixed with the horizontal lettering of the player name allows for the card to feature both a nice cameo photo as well as a large action photo as well.
This card is a very welcomed addition to my Mike Schmidt player collection!

Deacon Phillippe holds the record for most complete games in a single World Series. In the 1903 match-up between Pittsburgh and Boston, Phillippe started games 1, 3, 4, 7, and 8 – and he completed all five of them!!
