2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-2 – Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

2012 Topps ‘Mound Dominance’ Subset – Card #MD-2 – Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

I really like the ‘Mound Dominance’ subset that Topps included in their 2012 base set.  The cards are sharp, the graphics are solid, and I am a sucker for cards that pay homage to a historic baseball event.

The ‘Mound Dominance’ set recalls 15 amazing pitching performances in major league history.

This is card#2 – Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers

The dominant day – June 12, 2007.  On this day, Verlander threw the first of the two no-hitters of his career thus far.  This performance was superb – 0 hits, 0 earned runs, 12 strikeouts, just 4 walks, and 112 pitches thrown.  The Tigers beat the Brewers by a score of 4-0.  And, amazingly, Verlander was just as dominant in the ninth inning as he was in the 9th – he was clocked at 102 MPH in inning number nine!!

Progress – 2/15

Eric Davis 1990 Donruss Bonus Card MVP – FAIL!!!

Eric Davis 1990 Donruss Bonus Card MVP

While the 1990 Donruss baseball card design was probably not created to be a perfect match for the Cincinnati Reds, it is not hard to see that the Red border works very well with the Red of Eric Davis’ ball cap.

It’s just too bad that Donruss did not opt for a better image to use of him for their MVP bonus set…

Happy Birthday Al Kaline!!!

Happy Birthday Al Kaline!!!

Al Kaline turns 78 years old today.

Back when the Detroit Tigers were a more meaningful and powerful franchise, they were led by the sensational Al Kaline.

Kaline spent 22 years in the major leagues, and he called Tiger Stadium home for the duration of that time.  A 15-time All-Star with the club, Kaline was on par with the game’s greatest talents from the 1950’s and 1960’s.

The member of the 1980 Baseball Hall of Fame class, Kaline collected 3,007 hits during his career along with 1,622 runs scored, 1,583 RBI, 399 home runs, and 137 stolen bases.  He won 10 Gold Gloves for his excellent play in the outfield as well.  Never an MVP, he did finish in the Top 10 on 9 separate occasions.

Kaline was the offensive leader of the Tigers team that won the 1968 World Series.  In 7 games, he hit .379 while connecting for 11 hits, including 2 doubles and 2 home runs.

Happy Birthday Mr. Kaline!!

Andre Dawson 2007 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts Certified Autographed Baseball Card

Andre Dawson 2007 Upper Deck SP Legendary Cuts Certified Autographed Baseball Card

This set is really starting to appeal to me.  At first, I thought that it was just too dark and did not really care for the Gold on Black accents that covered a large portion of the card.

Now, I am starting to like the layout of the design much more.  The Gold actually looks a lot bolder against the Black background too.

I know that Andre Dawson has two cards in this set that feature his signature; as does Fergie Jenkins.

I will try to nab all four of them for my collection.

Call this Card #1:

Normally, I am not picky as to whether the autograph is in the form of a sticker or on-card.  But, for this one, because of the very dark background, it had to be a sticker.  And I am perfectly fine with that…
