Frank Robinson 2013 Topps Series 1 ‘Chasing History’

Frank Robinson 2013 Topps Series 1 ‘Chasing History’

I tell you what, in my opinion Topps should be very happy that their ‘Chasing History’ subset looks as nice as it does.

Here is some proof: Frank Robinson’s card

VINATGE ROBINSON CHASING

You see, when I hear the word ‘Chasing’ it is usually used in the present or it has just recently past.  EX: I was chasing the bus hoping to catch it.

Topps is celebrating Frank Robinson’s historic Triple Crown Award from 1966.  And I am good with that, great with that!  But it happened more than 40 years ago – he has not chased anything in a very long time.

For me, ‘Chasing History’ should be used for more current events and for future historic occasions…

Alan Trammell 1989 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice Detroit Tigers Team Card

Alan Trammell 1989 Upper Deck Collector’s Choice Detroit Tigers Team Card

If you needed more proof that the Upper Deck Collector’s Choice team checklist cards issued in the 1989 set were better than what Donruss was doing with their Diamond Kings brand, I give you this:

TRAMMELL 5

This is the Detroit Tigers checklist from the ’89 set.  Featuring Alan Trammell, this card is so much better looking than any of the Trammell Diamond Kings that could be had in the early 1980’s.

Nicely done, Mr. Wells!

Play Ball!!!

Play Ball!!!

Finally we get to hear those two words we’ve been wanting to hear since November – ‘PLAY BALL’!!!

I am very excited that the 2013 baseball season is here. And since the Marlins are on the road facing the Washington Nationals in their first game of the season, I am going to make every effort possible to sneak over to the sports bar across the street for my version of an ‘Executive Lunch’ so I can catch a little of the action.

As a kid, I always wanted to go to an Opening Day game, but there was no team in Florida during my youth. And as an adult, I guess that work and other priorities have gotten in my way as I have still not been able to conquer that dream.

I promise that one day I will!!!

Until then, ‘PLAY BALL’!!!!

Happy Birthday Phil Niekro!!!

Happy Birthday Phil Niekro!!!

Today, Phil Niekro turns 74 years old!!!

Still being seen around Spring Training, Phil Neikro has had baseball pumping through his blood for more than 50 years. A Hall of Fame pitcher with 24 major league seasons under his belt, Niekro put on a pitching seminar through the 1960’s, 1970’s, and 1980’s. With a career record of 318-274, one has to wonder how many more victories Niekro would have notched if he had played on some of the better teams from his playing days.

In 24 seasons, Niekro only made it to the post-season twice, and neither time was to the World Series.

Happy Birthday Mr. Niekro!!!

FOR AN ANDRE DAWSON FAN, THIS IS THE GREATEST EBAY AUCTION EVER LISTED!!! AND I WON!!!!

FOR AN ANDRE DAWSON FAN, THIS IS THE GREATEST EBAY AUCTION EVER LISTED!!!  AND I WON!!!!

Let me paint the picture for you:

Last Sunday while driving around doing errands with the family, I was surfing the web on my phone.  That is not uncommon, and it is also not uncommon to stay on top of newly listed Ebay auctions this way as well.

So, while checking out the newly listed auctions that contained ‘Andre Dawson’ in the title, a new one popped up that said ‘Andre Dawson – VIP Experience’.

Well, that doesn’ t sound like a new baseball card or autograph or magazine, so I dug into the product description to read on.

And I found this:

Dawson VIP Experience

A once in a lifetime experience was right!!!

So, I hit the ‘Watch’ button and watched it all week long – not bidding, just monitoring activity.  I had no idea how much the auction would sell for, and if I had a chance or not.  All it would take is an aggressive doctor or lawyer to buy this for his 11-year old son and I would be screwed…  Still, I was excited about the possibilities…

Fast forward to today.

I have the family at the park playing on the swings and kicking around the soccer ball.  My Iphone alarm is set to give me a ring ten minutes before the auction ends.

Two minutes before the auction ends, I plan my attack, with wife’s approval, to place a bid.

AND I WON!!!!!

I will be going to a Marlins game with my wife.  We will be meeting Andre Dawson and going on the field with him.  We will be watching batting practice from the field with Andre Dawson.  We will be sitting right behind home plate at Marlins Park with Andre Dawson.

I WILL BE WATCHING A LIVE BASEBALL GAME, IN MY CITY, WITH THE BASEBALL PLAYER THAT MEANS THE MOST TO ME!!!!

I cannot wait for this to happen.  Now, I just need to review the schedule to make sure that it works for the Marlins and Mr. Dawson, and then me and my wife are there!!!

Stay tuned to ’30-YOC’ – I will keep you posted as news and information becomes available.
