Dwight Gooden 2005 Upper Deck Classics – Star Retro Rookies
I have always been a very big fan of the 2005 Upper Deck Classics ‘Star Retro Rookies’ set.
The set features fantastic colors, and almost all of the images appear to leap from card with the subtle 3-D effect that Upper Deck employed for the set.
To date, I have yet to find a card from this issue that is not appealing (ok, maybe one – the Jim Palmer card is not that great). But the Dawson, Murphy, Morgan, and Gwynn cards all look great.
And now, I have another beauty from this set in my collection – the card of Dr. K himself, Dwight Gooden!!
Have a look:
Just like the others, the card’s coloring is perfect – bright and bold!!
I wish that they all could be like this.

Keith Hernandez 1981 Topps
Wow, it is amazing to think that the 1981 Topps baseball card set is more than thirty years old…
Still, in my opinion the sets holds up nicely. And I have a fun time going back to look at cards from this issue as they offer some pretty good photography (for early 80’s).
This Keith Hernandez card from the 1981 Topps set is superb.
The border color is a nice complement to the Cardinals’ team colors, and the Red hat in the lower-left hand side looks great. I also really like the photo selection as it shows how focused Hernandez was while playing first base.
Hernandez was the dominant 1B during his prime, and this card certainly takes us right back to that time!!

The pitcher that led all American League hurlers in wins during the 1960’s was Jim Kaat. Kaat captured 142 wins during the decade easily outdistancing Camilo Pascaul who finished in second place with 127.

Happy Birthday Bert Blyleven!!!
Bert Blyleven turns 62 years old today!!
Bert Blyleven may be more popular among baseball fans and collectors today than he was during any time in his playing days. His recent election into the Baseball Hall of Fame coupled with his success as the had coach for the Netherlands during the WBC in 2009 has brought renewed life into collecting all things Bert.
Mr. Blyleven has put together an amazing resume. In 22 seasons, Mr. Blyleven recorded a win-loss record of 287-250. He threw 242 complete games and 60 shutouts. He has tallied 3,701 career strikeouts while finishing his career with a 3.31 ERA. He also has 2 World Series rings from his days with the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates and 1987 Minnesota Twins teams.
Happy Birthday Mr. Blyleven!!!

Baseball Card Show Tonight!!! YES!!!!
I am really looking forward to attending tonight’s card show – probably more than any show in the last six months…
The reasons are many, and I hope that they are attainable as well.
Let’s get right into what I am seeking this time.
The shopping list:
- 2013 Opening Day Marlins Blue parallels
- 2013 Heritage Giancarlo Stanton variations
- 2013 Topps Series One Marlins colored parallels
- 2011 Topps Lineage Marlins – Platinum and Diamond parallels
- 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen singles
- 2012 Topps Archives ‘Deckle Edge’ cards for my set
- 2012 Topps Archives ‘Cloth Stickers’ for my set
- 2012 Topps Gypsy Queen ‘Moonshots’ for my set
As you can see, I have a lot of modern cards I am seeking a lot of modern cards this time around. And while I will not stop my search for vintage goodies, I am just really excited to see if I can complete a few sets I am working on while at the show.
And then there is Gypsy Queen – probably my favorite modern release!! With the set debuting just this week, I am hopeful that the card show dealers have had enough time to rip through their boxes and cases to put some singles out for sale. If so, I will find them. And if I find them, I will bring them home!! The GQ set is full of every player that I collect – Dawson, Jenkins, Palmer, Morgan, Williams, Henderson, Aaron, and so many more. And then there are the Marlins cards I need too.
I cannot wait for the show to begin.
And on Monday, I will show off what I found. My fingers are crossed that I find what I am looking for.
