Eric Davis ‘Fab Five’ – Card #2 – 1989 Topps
Now that my Eric Davis player collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.
Card #2 – 1989 Topps
I firmly believe that the 1989 Topps baseball card set is one of the most underrated issues from the decade.
The set offers a very classic design and a nice team name and player name graphic. The placement of the graphic allows for a large image to take center stage as the card’s main feature. Lastly, it is the images team-colored border that ties it all together to complete what I believe is one of the best looking base card designs from the decade.
And yes, this card of Eric Davis is one of my favorites from the set – great color, supreme image selection, and a crisp and clean look!

Fergie Jenkins 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen – mini
I am in full ‘Chase Mode’ as I go after the full spectrum of cards of Fergie Jenkins from this year’s Gypsy Queen release.
This is Fergie’s first year in the set, and I am going after him with full gusto!!!
I may not be able to snag a wood or leather bordered card, but I should be able to bring home the rest of them.
Here is the base mini of Mr. Jenkins from the set:
And now it is time to go after the Black and Green bordered mini variations.
I’M ON IT!!!

Starlin Castro 2012 Topps Archives ’77 Cloth Stickers
I tell you what, while some of the modern cards from this set don’t work as well as the legends, this one of Starlin Castro passes the test with flying colors!!
Here is the card:
Castro has been a very impressive player since making his major league debut in 2010 as a 20-year old.
At the start of the 2013 baseball season Castro already had 529 career hits – a very impressive and strong start to what can become a legendary career.
Stock up on those rookie cards now folks!!!
Sparky Anderson 1989 Topps Detroit Tigers Manager Card
There he is and he may be getting ready to lay into one of his players…
One of the things that I most remember about watching Anderson as a manager was that his body language almost always reflected his mood. He was not one to hide how he felt.
And in this shot, used on his 1989 Topps baseball card, it looks like he is not too happy as he peers at someone on the bench for the Tigers.
Have a look:
The 1989 baseball season was a mess. Finishing in last place for the first time in his eleven years with the team, Anderson’s Tigers team was 59-103 finishing the season with the most losses in major league baseball.
Now I know why Sparky was so upset….

Andre Dawson 2013 Topps Tribute – Base
Since the launch of the 2013 Topps Tribute set a few weeks ago, I have really tried to stick to my guns of not having to buy the first version of each card and parallel that I see on Ebay.
This philosophy allows to me save some money (most likely for future cards) and still bring home what I want. Sure, I may have to wait a little longer to secure the freshly minted cards of my favorite players, but it is not a sprint – it is certainly a marathon.
So, I was able to hold out as the new Tribute cards started to appear on the secondary market.
And after about a week, and 50 to 60 listings for the base card, I finally snagged the Andre Dawson card.
Have a look:
I have always liked the Tribute set, and I like this new 2013 issue as well.
As with the prior releases, there is a small stack of colored parallel versions to go after. And I am hoping that in time, I can bring a few more of them into my collection.
Wish me luck!!
