Paul Molitor 2013 Topps Archives – 1985 Topps Design

Paul Molitor 2013 Topps Archives – 1985 Topps Design

Of the many ‘way too zoomed in’ images that the 2013 Topps Archives product brought us this year, this one of Paul Molitor does not bother me that much.

Maybe it is because you can see that he is having a really good time; probably yucking it up with a few of his teammates prior to the start of a game.

Have a look:

I do, however, wish that with these Archives cards that Topps inserted the players into the designs we have not seen them in before.

The 2013 Archives brand featured the 1972, 1982, 1985, and 1990 original Topps designs.  We’ve already got base cards of Molitor from the 82, 85, and 90 sets – why not give us the ’72 as a treat?!?!?!

Mike Schmidt 1988 Donruss All-Star

Mike Schmidt 1988 Donruss All-Star

I am a big fan of baseball cards that celebrate achievement.  And while I may not agree with how players are chosen for the baseball’s annual All-Star Game, I am always happy to see the attention that these special players are given by the card companies by being named All-Stars.

And Donruss did a pretty solid job of it back in the day – much better than Topps, for sure!!

This is Mike Schmidt’s card from the 1988 Donruss set.

This card celebrates Schmidt’s selection to the 1987 National League All-Star team.

It was a worthy honor and it marks 11th of Schmidt’s 12 All-Star Game selections.

1989 HEADLINE: Bo Jackson & Wade Boggs Kick Off The All-Star Game With A Bang!!!

1989 HEADLINE: Bo Jackson & Wade Boggs Kick Off The All-Star Game With A Bang!!!

On this day in 1989, Bo Jackson and Wade Boggs led off the 1989 Major League All-Star game with back-to-back home runs.

I vividly recall watching this game as a youngster living in the Chicago suburbs. And after the National League was retired in the first inning I was excited to see what Bo Jackson was going to do in his debut at the All-Star Game.

Well, Bo did not disappoint.

And after he touched home while listening to the roar of the crowd, Wade Boggs took center stage. And he too delivered baseball magic.

It was a sweet start to a great game. And a memory that I will hold with me for a very, very long time.

Happy Anniversary to Bo Jackson and Wade Boggs!!!

1985 HEADLINE: Nolan Ryan First to 4,000 Strikeouts!!

1985 HEADLINE: Nolan Ryan First to 4,000 Strikeouts!!

On this day in 1985, Nolan Ryan collected his 4,000th career strikeout – a first in baseball history.

At home and in front of a crowd that was just a shade over 20,000, Ryan made baseball history again. In the top of the 6th inning, he struck out Danny Heep of the Mets giving him the 4,000th strikeout of his big league career.

His line for the day – 7 innings pitched, 7 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks, and 11 strikeouts!!

Happy Anniversary Mr. Ryan!!!

HE’S BACK!!!!!!

David Ortiz Becomes The All-Time Hits Leader At DH!!!!

From SI.com

SEATTLE — Boston’s David Ortiz has passed Harold Baines to become Major League Baseball’s career leader in hits by a designated hitter.

Ortiz collected his 1,689th hit as a DH when he doubled to left-center field leading off the second inning Wednesday night against the Seattle Mariners. Ortiz received a loud ovation from the fans at Safeco Field when the milestone was shown on the video board and tipped his cap in appreciation.

Ortiz already holds marks for the most runs scored, doubles, home runs, extra-base hits and RBIs by a designated hitter. Ortiz entered Wednesday night on a roll, hitting .403 at the plate over his previous 20 games. He had four hits on Tuesday night to tie Baines’ mark, including two doubles and a home run.
