Jim Palmer 2012 Topps ‘Golden Moments’ – Mini

Jim Palmer 2012 Topps ‘Golden Moments’ – Mini

I know, I know, I am a year behind on this, but I have finally hauled in Jim Palmer’s ‘mini’ card from the Topps Exclusive mini set of 2012.

The card is exactly the same as Palmer’s base card from the set, just about 20% smaller.

The new 2013 minis debuted at the National Card Convention in August.  I will do my best to grab the cards from that set that I ‘need’ when I can.  Hopefully, it does not take me a year to find them…

Carlton Fisk 1983 Donruss

Carlton Fisk 1983 Donruss

During the early years of Donruss being in the baseball card business, they did not bring us a lot of creative looks.

The first one  that left an impression on me is their 1983 issue and that ‘Glove & Bat Graphic’ in the lower portion of the card.  Back when the cards were still ‘new’ to the hobby, I found the graphics to be fun.  And when compared to the prior designs that Donruss offered us in their 1981 and 1982 releases, these were stellar!

Check it out:

Today, I still like the cards quite a bit.  And it is all due to the graphics.

But, with a more critical eye, I have to say that it would have been neat if Donruss used a right-handed glove for the righties, a left-handed glove for the lefties, an infield mitt for the infielders, an outfield glove for the outfielders, and a catcher’s mitt for the guys like Fisk!!

1998 HEADLINE: Mark McGwire Tops Roger Maris With 62nd Home Run Of The Season

1998 HEADLINE: Mark McGwire Tops Roger Maris With 62nd Home Run Of The Season

On this day in 1998, Mark McGwire broke one of the records in baseball that most fans thought would never fall.

At home, and playing in the historic Busch Stadium, ‘Big Mac’ hit the 62nd home runs of his 1998 baseball season, eclipsing the 61 round-trippers that Roger Maris hit during the 1961 season.

One of the game’s greatest sluggers, it was this home run that catapulted McGwire into the main-stream of America and made his name known in every household.  And while some were not too happy that Maris’ record had been snapped, it is very clear that McGwire did quite a bit in 1998 to rekindle life into a sport that needed it desperately!

Thank You and Happy Anniversary Mark McGwire!!!

1972 HEADLINE: Fergie Jenkins Captures 20th Win In Sixth Consecutive Season

1972 HEADLINE: Fergie Jenkins Captures 20th Win In Sixth Consecutive Season

On this day in 1972, Fergie Jenkins recorded his 20th win of the baseball season.  This victory gave Fergie 20 wins, or more, in 6 consecutive seasons and solidified him as one of the most dominant and consistent pitchers of his era.

Here is a quick look at Fergie’s amazing 6-year run:

Year Wins Losses Win %
1967 20 13 61%
1968 20 15 57%
1969 21 15 58%
1970 22 16 58%
1971 24 13 65%
1972 20 12 63%
Totals 127 84 60%

Not a bad run at all!!!

I was trying to find out how many 1-run games Fergie lost during that time.  I know that I have heard the number before, but I don’t want to mis-quote it.  I have searched around a bit but have not come up with an easy way to find that number.  If I recall correctly, it was somewhere in the neighborhood if 15 or so…

Happy Anniversary to my favorite pitcher of all-time, Mr. Ferguson Arthur Jenkins!!!

My Fergie Jenkins 2013 Topps ‘Gypsy Queen Rainbow’ Is Complete!!!

My Fergie Jenkins 2013 Topps ‘Gypsy Queen Rainbow’ Is Complete!!!

Friends, I am very excited to show off my newly completed Fergie Jenkins 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen Rainbow to you.

As you know, the GQ set is my favorite Topps release, and this was the first time that Fergie has been included in the set.  When the checklist was released and I found his name included, I immediately knew that I would try my best to complete the rainbow.

And after taking my time and not over-paying too much for the cards, I very proud to show it off to you now.

Here are the cards to the set:

The Rainbow!!!

The hardest card for me to pull for this set was the ‘Mini Green’.  I’m not sure why, but I had a much harder time tracking this one down than the others.

My lone complaint about the set?  I wish that Fergie was included in the White Frame and Blue Frame versions – it would have been two more cards to go after and would have made the task of completing the rainbow just a tad more challenging.

I’m so happy that Topps included Fergie in this set.  Hopefully they continue that trend in 2014!
