Joe Morgan 2013 Panini Golden Age = ART

Joe Morgan 2013 Panini Golden Age = ART

While very rare, there are some baseball cards that take my thoughts past the cardboard.  They take me to a billboard or a sign or a piece of art hanging on the walls of a stadium.

This card of Joe Morgan from the 2013 Panini Golden Age baseball card set is definitely one of those cards.

The card offers a great image, exceptional color, sharp design, and best of all – Drama!!!

Have a look:

I would proudly hang a print of this card in my office!!

Great work by Panini on this one.

Reggie Jackson 2000 Upper Deck Yankees Legends – “Magic Numbers”

Reggie Jackson 2000 Upper Deck Yankees Legends – “Magic Numbers”

This is a pretty neat baseball card, and I love the historic theme.

‘Magic Numbers’ pays homage to all of the jersey numbers that the Yankees have retired for their franchise.

On the left side of the card, listed in numerical order are the players.  This card was designed and released in 2000, so any player’s number retired after that would not be present.

You’ve got to love #44!!!

1987 HEADLINE: Darryl Strawberry & Howard Johonson – First Ever 30/30 Teammates!!

1987 HEADLINE: Darryl Strawberry & Howard Johonson – First Ever 30/30 Teammates!!

On this date in 1987, Darryl Strawberry and Howard Johnson of the New York Mets became the first ever teammates to both join the ’30/30′ club in the same season.

The ’30/30′ club is pretty exclusive.  And the members have to be a very specific kind of player.  Powerful enough to hit bomb after bomb into the outfield seats, yet graceful and quick enough to swipe base after base in a frenzied rush to outrun a catcher’s throw.

It’s an amazing accomplishment to become a member of the ’30/30′ club.  But when 2 players on the same team reach that goal, it is baseball history!!!

By the end of the ’87 season, Darryl Strawberry finished the season with 39 home runs and 36 stolen bases.  With him was teammate Howard Johnson who crushed 36 homers and swiped 32 bases.

Congrats to Straw & HOJO!!!

1983 HEADLINE: Ferguson Jenkins Captures Final Win Of His Career, #284

1983 HEADLINE: Ferguson Jenkins Captures Final Win Of His Career, #284

On this day in 1983, Fergie Jenkins recorded the final win of his 19-year major league career.

The win, #284 of his career and #6 of the 1983 baseball season, came in a 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.

Jenkins entered the game in a relief role and blew the save allowing two runs to the Pirates in the top of the seventh inning giving the Bucs the lead.  But, the Cubs scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning giving the Cubs the lead and putting Jenkins on track for the win.

On the night, Jenkins threw 1.2 innings allowing 2 hits and 2 runs while walking 2 batters and striking out 2 others.  He lasted long enough to secure the victory, with Lee Smith picking up the save.

Happy Anniversary Mr. Jenkins!!!

1970 HEADLINE: Vida Blue Hurls No-Hitter In Just 8th Big League Start!!!

On this day in 1970, Vida Blue threw a no-hitter for the Oakland A’s.  Amazingly, it was just the eight start of his major league career.

At home and in front of a crowd that just eclipsed 4,000 fans, the 20-year old Blue put on quite a performance.

The numbers – 9 innings pitched, 0 hits allowed, 1 walk, 9 strikeouts, and most importantly an Oakland Athletics victory!!!

Happy Anniversary Mr. Blue!!!

Happy Birthday Cecil Fielder!!!

Happy Birthday Cecil Fielder!!!

Cecil Fielder turns 50 years old today!!

As mighty of a power hitter as there ever has been, Cecil Fielder is the owner of some of the biggest, and longest home runs hit in the last 30 years!!

To say he is known for one thing is a fair statement.  That happens when you bash 51, 44, 35, 30, 38, 31, and 39 home runs in consecutive seasons.  But Fielder’s game was a bit more well-rounded than his power numbers may hint at.  ‘Big Daddy’ had 7 straight seasons with at least 100 hits or more and he also had two seasons where he scored 100+ runs.

Cecil Fielder is a 3-time All-Star, 2-time Silver Slugger winner, and a World Series champion.

Happy Birthday Cecil Fielder!!!

Florida Marlins 1993 Bowman Baseball Card Team Set

Florida Marlins 1993 Bowman Baseball Card Team Set

I recently picked up a lot of Marlins team sets on Ebay from one of my favorite sellers.  His prices are fantastic, and even with the combined shipping rates that he offers, I am typically paying between $1.50 and $2.00 per team set purchased.

My focus this time around was to go after some more vintage sets – so I focused on the early years of the team – back from the Black & Teal days.

This is the 1993 Bowman team set:

These Bowman baseball cards are so much nicer that Bowman’s releases in 1989, 1990, and 1991.  I like that the entire card’s surface is covered by the featured photo.  The Bowman logo and player’s name are not a distraction at all, and the image is allowed to be the focal point.

I would however, like to see the team logo on display on the card’s front – without it, the card feels a bit incomplete…
