Hank Aaron 2001 Topps American Pie

Hank Aaron 2001 Topps American Pie

Topps’ American Pie set from the early 2000’s has always been one that I enjoy.  My favorite aspect of the set is the great vintage uniforms that the set displays for us.

And the Braves uniform that Hank Aaron is wearing in this card from the American Pie set is one that I love.  It’s just too bad that we don’t get to see enough of it on this shot.

I wear baseball caps all of the time and have a collection in the teens right now.  If I can find one with that famous ‘a’ on it, I will have to add another to my wardrobe!

2013 Topps Gypsy Queen ‘Collisions At The Plate’ Subset – Wilin Rosario

2013 Topps Gypsy Queen ‘Collisions At The Plate’ Subset – Wilin Rosario

The theme of ‘Collision At The Plate’ is one that I think all baseball fans could get excited about. The play in which two players collide with completely opposite goals: 1 putting their body on the line in an effort to score a run for their team. 1 putting every ounce of energy, strength, and will into defending their plate.

Oh yes, the ‘Collision At The Plate’ is the perfect place for baseball drama to be born. And as soon as I saw that the 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen set was going to include a subset of cards with the title of ‘Collisions At The Plate’, I knew I would be going after it.

This is the Wilin Rosario card from the set:

In just his third big league season, Wilin Rosario is already staking his claim as one of the best young catchers in the game.  He is a solid offensive player and is also showing the needed signs that he is becoming a great defender as well.

Between his high fielding percentage and his ability to stay close to the league average of throwing out base runners that are trying to steal on his team, Rosario has the skills to take it to the next level.

Time will tell if he does…  Stay tuned.

Roberto Clemente 2012 Topps ‘Gold Standard’ – 3,000 Hits Club

Roberto Clemente 2012 Topps ‘Gold Standard’ – 3,000 Hits Club

As I continue to spend time learning about the major league career of Roberto Clemente, I become more and more in awe of the player and the man who put the city of Pittsburgh firmly on the baseball map.

Clemente was as well round of a baseball player as there ever has been, and his ability to carry a team, single-handedly at times, was superb.

One of the main individual accomplishments of his big league career, Clemente reached the 3,000 hits plateau.  The hit, was the final hit of his big league career – kind of fitting to have the last one be so baseball-rich!!

This card from the 2012 Topps ‘Gold Standard’ set celebrates that hit.  And I have to say that I truly love the old White Pirates uniforms he is wearing in this shot!

1992 HEADLINE: Dave Winfield Becomes Oldest MLB Player To Drive In 100 Runs

1992 HEADLINE: Dave Winfield Becomes Oldest MLB Player To Drive In 100 Runs

On this day in 1992, Dave Winfield became the oldest player in major league history to collect 100 RBI in a single season.

At the age of 40, and playing for the Toronto Blue Jays, Winfield tallied 108 RBI by the end of the 1990 baseball season.

His efforts were rewarded very kindly – a World Series championship.  Winfield collected three more RBI in the Fall Classic as well.

Happy Anniversary Mr. Winfield!!!

1972 HEADLINE: Jim Palmer Snags 100th Major League Win

1972 HEADLINE: Jim Palmer Snags 100th Major League Win

On this day in 1972, Jim Palmer captured the 100th victory of his major league career.

In Milwaukee and facing the Brewers at County Stadium, Palmer and the Orioles took the field in front of just under 6,000 fans.

Palmer put in a solid outing going into the ninth inning before turning it over to his bullpen to seal the 4-3 victory and his 100th career win.

His numbers on the day: 8.1 innings of work, 7 hits allowed, 3 runs scored, 1 strikeout and 0 walks.

Congrats on #100 Mr. Palmer!!

Happy Birthday Rafael Palmeiro!!!

Happy Birthday Rafael Palmeiro!!!

Rafael Palmeiro turns 49 years old today.

Rafael Palmeiro quietly put together an amazing career as he reached several baseball milestones that define greatness as an offensive player.  While never considered to be the best player in the league, and even on his team at times, Palmerio’s numbers are rare.

No batting titles.  Only 1 season of 200 or more hits.  But, consistency was Palmeiro’s game.  In his 20-season career, Palmerio collected 3,020 hits.  Hitting between 140-170 hits a year is all it took for Palmeiro to become one of the game’s most consistent offensive players.  His career batting average is .288, and he has 6 seasons of hitting .300 or better.

Palmeiro also had a power game that was rare for such a disciplined contact hitter.  ‘Raffy’ has 569 career home runs which places him in 10th place in baseball history.  Off to a relatively slow start in the beginning of his career, Palmeiro’s power numbers began to take off during the 1991 season.  From 1999-2004, Palmeiro hit at least 22 homers per season with his maximum output being 47 in both the 1999 and 2001 seasons.

‘Raffy’ has also collected 1,835 RBI and has scored 1,663 runs during his playing days.

Palmeiro has finished in the Top 19 for the MVP award 10 times.  He is a 4-time All-star, a 3-time Gold Glove award winner, and a 2-time Silver Slugger winner.

Happy Birthday Raffy!!!

Starting A New Book Today – Roberto Clemente: The Passion And Grace Of Baseball’s Last Hero

Starting A New Book Today – Roberto Clemente: The Passion And Grace Of Baseball’s Last Hero

Late last week I finished a very interesting book about the personality of Pete Rose.  This week, I jump right into my next reading adventure – a book about Hall of Famer, Roberto Clemente.

A few months ago, I declared myself a Roberto Clemente collector.  When doing so, my goal was two-fold: (1) put together a collection of cards that honor Clemente’s career (2) learn about the grand career of Clemente and how his life effected people both on and off the baseball field.

Personally, I have always held Mr. Clemente in very high regard.  But, that was more out of sheer respect – I really don’t know too much about him.

So, I am eager to start reading this book.  We’ll see how long it takes me to get through this 350-page doozie…

Andre Dawson 2012 Panini National Treasures Authentic Game-Used Jersey Card

Andre Dawson 2012 Panini National Treasures Authentic Game-Used Jersey Card

While not purposely trying to be too picky, I had passed on buying this card multiple times on Ebay.

But, when I found the card listed for $0.99 with no bidders and a fair shipping price of just $2.00, I decided it was time.  So, I placed a bid and won the card – with no competition…

The card comes from the 2012 Panini National Treasures set and features a nice picture of Andre Dawson from his days with Montreal.  Centered below Dawson’s images is a nice White swatch of jersey from his playing days.

The card is nice, just not very exciting.

Have a look:

It’s not that I don’t like the card, not at all, I just was hoping for a little more color with the jersey swatch.  A Expos Blue would really look outstanding on this card and I was hoping that I could hold out and find one.

Hopefully I can find the same card with another jersey color to accompany this one.  I think that with the right color of jersey swatch on this card, it could really come to life!!!
