Andre Dawson 1989 Marathon Oil Gameday Giveaway Jumbo Card

Andre Dawson 1989 Marathon Oil Gameday Giveaway Jumbo Card

For a few years in the very late 1980’s and into the early 1990’s, Marathon Oil Company teamed up with the Chicago Cubs to offer giveaways for fans attending games at Wrigley Field.

In total, there are three sets of Marathon Oil Cubs cards – 1989, 1990,  and 1991.

I already owned the 1990 and 1991 cards of Dawson for my collection.  And now, after a long search that included finding nothing for a very long time, I have scored the 1989 card for my collection.

Check it out:

DAWSON MARATHON OIL

The card is oversized and has more of a postcard feel than a baseball card feel.

I need to try to find a few more top-loaders that can accommodate cards of this size…

I am very excited to say that my trio of Andre Dawson Marathon Oil baseball cards is finally complete!!!

Joe Morgan 2013 Panini Cooperstown – ‘Induction’

Joe Morgan 2013 Panini Cooperstown – ‘Induction’

I still have not made my way to review the entire checklist from this ‘Induction’ subset, but I will.

I know that there are at least two players that I really like that are included: Andre Dawson and Joe Morgan.

I showed off the Dawson card that I picked up a few weeks ago, and now I have finally secured the one of Joe Morgan.

Have a look:

I love it!!!

Morgan was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990 with another ’30-YOC’ favorite, Jim Palmer.  This card captures Joe with his Hall of Fame plaque from that very special day.

And now, I am committing myself to reviewing the checklist.  This could be a very fun set to attempt to collect, and I know two of the players featured are ones that I truly cherish!!

I’ll let you know what I find out…

Reggie Jackson 1995 Upper Deck SP Championship Series – October Legends

Reggie Jackson 1995 Upper Deck SP Championship Series – October Legends

Normally I would not advocate the color of Purple for being a great idea as a baseball card border color.

But sometimes, like in life, taking a chance pays off!

And this is one of those times.  This baseball card is from the 1995 Upper Deck SP Championship Series and it is tagged as ‘October Legends’.  Of course when a card set has that name, Mr. October is going to be included in the set.

And the card looks pretty good!

REGGIE 6

The Purple border and the faded background of the image allow for the great image of Reggie to really pop.  And but placing his batting helmet on top of the Purple border allows for the card to have a nice 3-D effect too.

NICE!!!

Jim Rice 2013 Panini ‘Golden Age’

Jim Rice 2013 Panini ‘Golden Age’

*Hat-Tip to reader Jarred for sending this card over to me in a recent trade – Thanks Bud!!!

This card of Hall of Famer Jim Rice comes from the 2013 Panini ‘Golden Age’ set of cards.  As we all know, Panini is not allowed to use MLB team names or logos on their product – a huge disadvantage when trying to use real images and turn them into cards that look like art.

But, they did a pretty solid job with this one…

GOLDEN AGE RICE

Nothing fake or forced about this card!

I like it!!!

Did You Know…

The member of the ‘3,000 Hits Club’ with the lowest career batting average is Carl Yastrzemski.  With 3,419 career hits, Yaz compiled a lifetime batting average of just .285.

Bryce Harper 2011 Topps Heritage Minors – ROOKIE CARD!!!

Bryce Harper 2011 Topps Heritage Minors – ROOKIE CARD!!!

While I don’t know everything that there is to know about modern baseball cards, especially ones that are not as mainstream as the ones I can find at my local Wal-Mart, I do know that the Heritage Minors set that Topps issues is one to go after when seeking rookie cards.

And when I formally announced my decision to collect Bryce Harper cards a few months back, I made this card one of my early targets.

The card comes from the 2011 Topps Heritage Minors set and it features Harper wearing his Harrisburg Senators uniform.

Check it out:

HARPER21

I like what Topps does with this set, and since I also have an affinity for vintage cards and designs, this one featuring the 1962 Topps design is right up my alley!!!

Hopefully I can haul in some more Bryce Harper rookie cards in the coming weeks and months ahead….  Stay tuned.
