Andre Dawson 1995 Upper Deck Special Edition – GOLD!!!

Andre Dawson 1995 Upper Deck Special Edition – GOLD!!!

I can easily state that finding new cards of Andre Dawson for my collection that were issued during his playing days is one of my greatest collecting thrills.

To be able to uncover a card that is 15-25 years old that I did not know existed makes this process of building the ‘Ultimate Dawson’ collection so much fun.

It’s one thing to have the stuff that everyone has.  But, it is an entirely new ballgame when you grab something that you have never seen before.

Kind of like this card below from the 1995 Upper Deck Special Edition set.  I have had the Silver card in my collection for some time.  But I recently encountered the Gold version.

And I had to grab it!!!

What a great shot of Andre.  Even during the later phases of his career, he really packed a strong and mighty swing.

A great addition to my collection!!

2012 Topps ‘Prime 9′ Home Run Legends Redemption Set – Babe Ruth

2012 Topps ‘Prime 9′ Home Run Legends Redemption Set – Babe Ruth

The 2012 Topps ‘Prime 9’ sets were issued through redemption cards that were inserted into hobby boxes of the Topps 2012 flagship baseball card set.  The cards were numbered and each card represented a specific card it could be redeemed for.

These special insert cards were redeemable only through hobby shops and Topps made these cards available for redemption on a very limited basis.

The card’s design is great, and I have been a fan ever since seeing them.  The high-gloss finish is unlike any that I have seen before and I like the fact that Topps rewards the baseball card business owner with such a nice, exclusive offer.

This is the Babe Ruth card from the set:

Some interesting Babe Ruth Home Run facts:

  • 499 versus right-handers, 215 versus lefties
  • 367 on the road, 347 at home
  • 123 against Detroit is most versus any single team
  • 85 most at visiting ballpark
  • only 70 games with 2 home runs and just 2 with 3 in the same game
  • 349 solo home runs
  • 133 came in first inning of a game, most of any inning

Fergie Jenkins 2013 Panini Cooperstown – Colgan’s Chips Disc – Chicago

Fergie Jenkins 2013 Panini Cooperstown –  Colgan’s Chips Disc – Chicago

I’m finding that my process of waiting for cards to hit Sportlots.com is paying off nicely.

Sure, I may not be the first collector to nab a newly released card, but the money that I am saving with my new approach is allowing me to get more quality cards while spending less.  A true ‘Win/Win’.

During a recent large spending spree, I recently picked up all of the Colgan’s Chips Discs from the 2013 Panini Cooperstown set that I wanted for my player collection.

I picked up 6 of them.

Here is the one of Fergie Jenkins.

I like it.  And I happen to think that this would be a very fun card to try to get signed one day.

Imagine this beauty with a Blue and bold Fergie Jenkins autograph scribbled across the front of it.

That would be cool!

Joe Morgan 2013 Panini Cooperstown – Green Crystal Parallel

Joe Morgan 2013 Panini Cooperstown – Green Crystal Parallel

The other day I showed you a 2013 Panini Cooperstown Green Parallel card of Jim Palmer that I recently scored for my collection.

Well, that was not the only card from this set that I bought when I grabbed the Palmer.

I also picked up the Green Crystal Parallel of Joe Morgan too.

Have a look:

The Green looks great with the Black and White images that Panini uses for these sets.

And something tells me that the Red Crystal version of Morgan’s card looks Suh-Wheet!!

I cannot wait to find one for myself…  Stay tuned.

Reggie Jackson 1986 Fleer – Mini

Reggie Jackson 1986 Fleer – Mini

For some reason, I never really got into collecting the mini baseball cards from the 1980’s as they came out.

Sure, I have a bunch of them now as most of my player collections tend to focus on the time when these cards were released at a high rate.  But, they never really did anything for me 20+ years ago.

This card of Reggie comes from the 1986 Fleer mini set and it is sweet.  I love the image that Fleer used for this card.  And the California Angels team colors and logo look good with the stark Navy Blue border.

Have a peek:

As for minis today, I love them!!  From Gypsy Queen to Kimball Champions, the mini baseball card of today is a nice way for Topps to pay tribute to the history of the hobby and I for one love finding ‘new’ mini cards to add to my collection.

Keith Hernandez 1986 Topps Record Breakers – WORST RECORD BREAKER EVER???

Keith Hernandez 1986 Topps Record Breakers

Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe that this one gets my vote.  And that is not a good thing.

This card of Keith Hernandez comes from the 1986 Topps baseball card set.  The card celebrates Hernandez setting the mark for most game-winning RBI collected over the course of a single season.

Instead, the card fails.  You would never know that the card is acknowledging history.

Not with a feature image like this one:

I cannot believe that this card made it past the editor’s desk.

Do you know of a worse ‘Record Breaker’ card?  If so, please let me know as I cannot think of one.

Someone needs a chinstrap….

Marlins Team Set #100 Causes Celebration & Expansion To Another Album!!!

Marlins Team Set #100 Causes Celebration & Expansion To Another Album!!!

That’s right, time for a little re-organizing and celebrating at ’30-YOC’!!!

I recently posted about adding the 2003 Topps Total Florida Marlins team set to my collection.  This was team set #100 for me, and I am very happy to have reached that collecting milestone.

As you can expect, 100 team sets takes up a considerable amount of room and my albums were stuffed.

Marlins Album 1

Still crazy organized, by year and then alphabetically by set name, my binders were starting to expand to a point that was above maximum occupancy.

Marlins Album 2

What is a collector to do???

He sends his wife on a mission during a grocery shopping run and asks for a new 3-inch, 3-ring binder – preferably in Marlins colors.

And as always, she delivered!!!

Marlins Album 3

So, I quickly split up the sets as evenly as I could, allowing room for expansion in each area of the team’s 20-year history.

As you can see below, I am already planning for 2014 as well.

Marlins Album 4

And now, with room in all three albums, I am ready to go-go-go!!!

Marlins Album 5

I have a small bank of team sets that I have yet to feature on the blog but I will do so in the coming weeks.

And with this added binder, I should be able to hold steady at three for at least the next 5-6 months as I build towards 150 team sets of my favorite team.

This has been a fun ride and I look forward to pushing to see how many more sets I can add in the near future.
