Frank Robinson 2004 Upper Deck Legends ‘ Timeless Teams’ – 1970 Baltimore Orioles

Frank Robinson 2004 Upper Deck Legends ‘ Timeless Teams’ – 1970 Baltimore Orioles

The 1970 Baltimore Orioles were a fantastic team, winning the grand prize of a World Series trophy at the conclusion of the season.

The team was loaded with stars on offense and elite starting pitching.  The end result was a 108-54 record and 1st place in the American League East.

Among the offensive superstars on the team was Frank Robinson.  During that ’70 campaign, Robinson hit 25 home runs while driving in 78 and scoring 88 times.  He hit .306 and had an on-base percentage of .398.

It is nice to see him honored with this card from the ‘Timeless Teams’ subset, I just wish that Upper Deck selected a better image for the card…

Dustin Pedroia 2010 Topps Chrome

Dustin Pedroia 2010 Topps Chrome

Have a look at this shiny beauty I recently scored of Dustin Pedroia:

This card comes from the 2010 Topps Chrome set and I love the image that Topps selected for the card.

By the looks of it, Pedroia has slid into third base and the photographer has captured the action very well, though it could be zoomed out just a bit more so we could see if he was out or safe.

I quickly peeked at his stats from 2010, and he had 9 stolen bases and just 1 triple during the course of the year.

2013 Topps Archives ‘Tallboys’ Subset – Ryan Braun

2013 Topps Archives ‘Tallboys’ Subset – Ryan Braun

With the new 2013 Topps Archives baseball card set release, the ‘Mini Tallboys’ subset is easily one of the best parts of the issue.

The cards from this subset offer a very basic, but throwback feel that screams vintage. The set is 40 cards deep and offers a nice mixture of current players, stars from the 1980′s, and Hall of Fame legends.

This is the card of Ryan Braun from the set:

I’m happy to get this card – get it off my ‘want list, that is…

With all of the dark clouds that have been hanging over the head of Ryan Braun for the last two seasons, I am a bit surprised to see Topps inserting Braun into subsets.

Surprised and a bit put-off too…

Ready for the next ‘Tallboy’!!!

Million Dollar Question – What Is Your Favorite Subset Of 2013??

Million Dollar Question – What Is Your Favorite Subset Of 2013??

If it was not for subsets, I am not certain that I would be as interested in modern baseball cards as I have become over the years.

Sure, collecting a complete sets of cards is a neat experience, and one that I enjoyed many moons ago, but I prefer the unique and oftentimes ‘special’ themes that a subset features.  And the fact that most modern subsets highlight former players makes it even better for a collector like me.

Over the years, I have put together a nice assortment of modern subsets.  And regardless of the theme, each has reserved a nice place in my subset album.

But, which one do I like best??  Which one do you like the best??

My answer may surprise you…

It’s one that I have yet to collect, but in time I will.

It’s from the 2013 Panini Cooperstown set – Colgan’s Chips!!!

Chips Lot

I love it!!

I love the looks, I love the disc shapes, I love the variety of players included in the set.  And best of all, I love that owning these cards feels like owning a modern ‘oddball’ baseball card.

As I mentioned earlier, in time I will go after this set – maybe a 2014 collecting goal.

How about you?  What is your favorite subset from all of the 2013 releases?  I cannot wait to hear your answers to this one..  Maybe I will find some more inspiration for my next wave of subsets to collect…

Let’s do this!!!
