Andrew McCutchen 2013 Topps Red-Border Exclusive

Andrew McCutchen 2013 Topps Red-Border Exclusive

When I decided to start collecting cards of Pirates MVP, Andrew McCutchen, the first thing I did was sift through all of the cards I had pulled from boxes and packs to see if I had any cards of ‘Cutch’ left.

I did – but it was just two.  All of the others were either traded away or given away in contests or giveaways on the blog.

Of the two that survived the cut, one was this Target Red card from the 2013 Topps Series 1 release.

The card looks nice in Red, as the Yellow accents and Pirates logo really stands out against the background.  And the picture comes to life a bit more too with this Red border.

I LIKE IT!!!  And I am happy that this was one of the very few that I held back on offering up…  I wish a few more survived.

2013 Topps Gypsy Queen ‘Glove Stories’ Subset – Jon Jay

2013 Topps Gypsy Queen ‘Glove Stories’ Subset – Jon Jay

Topps’ Gypsy Queen brand offers up some pretty sweet 10-card subsets that feature intense action.

One of my favorite parts about the GQ subsets is that they don’t simply throw in the top players – they truly find incredible images regardless of the player’s star power.  What this does is introduce us to other talents that perform at high levels while also allowing for players that are not always in the spotlight a chance to shine for a bit.

The ‘Glove Stories’ set primarily features outfielders with 8 cards, and has 2 infielder cards as well.

This is the Jon Jay card from the set:

Great plays are always amplified during the playoffs as each out has more meaning than that of one during a regular season contest.  And that is why this catch by Cardinals’ outfielder Jon Jay is still highly regarded today.

The catch came in Game 2 of the NLDS in 2012 MLB playoffs where the Cardinals and Nationals battled for a chance to play for the National League Championship.  Jay made this catch off the bat of Danny Espinosa ensuring that no runs would be scored off this hit!!

George Brett 1986 Topps A.L. All-Star

George Brett 1986 Topps A.L. All-Star

Looks like it was a windy afternoon in Arizona on this afternoon, huh??

BRETT 7

You’d think that the photographers that were managing this shoot with Mr. Brett would have either had a contraption to help block the wind.  Or at the very least, given the man a cap…

Happy Birthday David Cone!!!

Happy Birthday David Cone!!!

David Cone turns 51 years old today.

Immensely talented, Cone was a dominant force over the course of his 17-season career.  With a lifetime record of 194-126, along with 2,668 strikeouts, Cone was often the leader of the rotation and set the pace for some of baseball’s greatest teams in the 1990’s.  In his best season as a member of the Kansas City Royals in 1994, David Cone won the Cy Young award.  With a 16-5 record alongside a 2.94 ERA and 2.44 K:walk ratio, Cone dominated the American League.  During his 17-year career, Cone finished in the top 6 for the Cy Young award a total of 5 times.

The individual highlight of Cone’s career is the perfect game he pitched in 1999 against the Expos.  As incredible as the no-hitter is, the perfect game is outstanding.  Cone dominated the Expos for 9 innings as he struck out 10 batters while not allowing any player for the Expos to reach first base.

David Cone may be the best example of a player being ‘in the right place at the right time’.  Cone has 5 World Series Championship rings. Simply Amazing.  Cone won 1 title with the Toronto Blue Jays and 4 more as a member of the New York Yankees.  In 15 post-season match-ups, Cone has a record of 8-3 with over 100 innings pitched.

Happy Birthday Mr. Cone!!

Happy Birthday Bill Madlock!!!

Happy Birthday Bill Madlock!!!

Bill Madlock turns 63 years old today.

One of the most underrated hitters of his era, Bill Madlock was a master at the plate!!

A 4-time batting champion, ‘Mad Dog’  finished his 15-year career with a .305 batting average.  His 4 batting titles included final averages of .354, .339, .341, and .323.

Madlock was a 3-time All-star and was part of the 1979 World Series championship winning Pittsburgh Pirates.  In that championship match-up, Madlock was phenomenal.  In 7 games, he hit .375 while collecting 9 hits as well as scoring 2 runs and driving in 3.

Happy Birthday Mr. Madlock!!!

30-Year Old Cardboard’s 2014 Collecting Goals!!!

30-Year Old Cardboard’s 2014 Collecting Goals!!!

I’m really happy with the format that I used for my 2013 goals post, so I will duplicate it here as I launch my goals for the 2014 collecting year.

I’ve been working on this for the better part of 3 weeks, and I am ready, and focused.

Here are my collecting goals for 2014:

1. Andre Dawson player collection.  I start the year with 1,132 unique cards in my collection.  I would like to add 40 new cards in the new year, but a lot of this depends on how many sets Dawson is included in for 2014.  I think I can get to this number with few issues, but having him in A&G and Gypsy Queen will help.  I will also try to bring in a few more relic and auto cards this year as compared to last.

2. Fergie Jenkins player collection.  I start the year with 290 unique cards in my collection.  I was cooking for a while in 2013, but this collection hit slow-motion half-way through the year.  I would like to get to 325, but like Dawson, it all depends on how many 2014 checklists Jenkins appears on as I have many of his ‘old’ cards.  I will also try to obtain a few more auto cards in the coming year.

3. Jim Palmer player collection.  I start the year with 239 unique cards in my collection and I think I can add 52 more, one per week – giving me 290.  I really need to dig deep on Palmer as he has a ton of modern cards out there that I do not yet have.  Even if he is limited in 2014 releases, I think I can achieve this – just need to focus.

4. Joe Morgan player collection.  I am starting the year with 170 unique cards in my Morgan collection.  And like the Palmer one, my goal is one new card per week bringing me close to 220 at the end of the year.  He should be in a lot of sets in 2014, and I know that I still have a bunch of modern sets I can tackle that he was a part of.

5. Modern Player Collections – Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton, Andrew McCutchen, Dustin Pedroia, and Jose Fernandez.  My goal for these players is simply to grow with and stay on track with their 2014 releases.  Because of the number of new sets that come out each year, and because these guys will be present in 100% of them, this is a big challenge.  But I am looking forward to it.

6. Marlins team sets.  I ended 2013 with 114 Marlins team sets in my collection.  If I can stay on track with the new sets as they are released, while also going back to some older ones, I think I can add one new set per week and go for 52 new ones – bringing my total to 166.  I want to pay special attention to ‘The Miguel Cabrera Years’ in 2014.

7. Subsets.  As always, I will build subsets that I find either appealing to the eye or that have a nice approach to the set/theme.  I have a few in mind from recent releases, but I am also open to seeing what comes from new 2014 issues too.  I am sure that Gypsy Queen will do something special this year, and I am eager to see if the flagship set presents us with something extra-unique in 2014 as well.

8. Signed baseball collection.  As with last year, this year will not be about numbers for me.  It is all about quality!  I have 3 baseballs in the works right now, so the collection will naturally grow.  But, for me, it is more about going after the players that created the history of the sport – and I have a lengthy list of guys I want to go after that helped do so.  This is always one of the best challenges for me – and I am ready to go!!

9. 1975.  Yes, 1975.  I am going to focus a lot of time concentrating on this year, the year of my birth.  I want memorabilia from 1975.  I want signed baseballs from 1975.  And you guessed right, I want cards from 1975 – I am going to build the 1975 Topps baseball card set!!

And there you have it, 2014 is going to be an unreal collecting year at ’30-YOC’ and I hope you are ready to sit beside me on this journey.

And pleases tell me about your goals too – it always interests me to see who is going after what….

Happy New Year everyone.  Now, let’s shop!!!
