2013 Topps Update ‘Postseason Heroes’ Subset – Nolan Ryan

2013 Topps Update ‘Postseason Heroes’ Subset – Nolan Ryan

The 2013 Topps Update baseball card set includes a subset tagged as ‘Postseason Heroes.  And with that theme, you would expect to find cards of modern players like Albert Pujols, Edgar Renteria, and Pablo Sandoval but none of these guys made the checklist.

That does leave room for some nice surprises…

This is the card of Nolan Ryan from the set:

With a major league career that spanned 27 seasons and four decades, Nolan Ryan appeared in the postseason just five times.  He and his New York Mets teammates made it to and won the 1969 World Series.

Ryan’s postseason career numbers are: 7 starts, 2-2 record, 1 save, 58 innings pitched, 3.07 ERA, 63 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Vince Coleman ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1988 Fleer

Vince Coleman ‘Fab Five’ – Card #4 – 1988 Fleer

Now that my Vince Coleman player collection is complete, it is time to show of my favorite five cards from the set.

Card #4 – 1988 Fleer

Because all games played at Wrigley Field prior to 1988 were played during the day, the ballpark was a hot-spot for sports photographers.

The reason?

Natural light!

No messing with flashes.  No worries about images coming out too dark.  Natural lighting serves as the best way to capture the action.

And that is why Wrigley Field, and the famous brick half-wall behind the batter is seen in a lot of cards that were issued in the 1980’s.

Lot Of 2 Reggie Jackson 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes – Oakland & New York

Lot Of 2 Reggie Jackson 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes – Oakland & New York

Oh yeah, a ‘double-shot’ for you on this wonderful Tuesday morning!!

This duo comes from the 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes baseball card set.  Each card is the base card of Reggie Jackson – both as a New York Yankee and a member of the Oakland Athletics.

Have a look:

I love this set, and I love the alternates that are a part of it.  I already have the Gold stamp ‘NY’ state version of the Reggie Jackson card.  Hopefully in time I can grab the ‘CA’ card to match Reggie’s A’s card.

And from there, on to the zip code cards!!!

Did You Know…

Hall of Fame Pitcher Early Wynn led all pitchers in strikeouts during the 1950’s.  From 1950-1959, Wynn struck out 1,544 batters while pitching for both the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox.

At Long Last, I Have Finally Brought Home An Eddie Murray Signed Baseball For My Collection!!

At Long Last, I Have Finally Brought Home An Eddie Murray Signed Baseball For My Collection!!

Remember my recent post about the Fergie Jenkins signed jersey that I bought as a result of having a nice ‘PayPal Balance’ to my credit?

If you did not get a chance to read that story, or want to visit the sweet jersey again, you can click here to check it out.

So, what did I do with the remaining balance?  Well, I shopped – a lot!

And when I found this item, which has been on my ‘want list’ for years, the shopping was over and it was time to BUY!!!

Have a look at my purchase:

Muray Ball

That’s right brother, a signed baseball by Hall of Famer Eddie Murray – complete with a ‘HOF 2003’ inscription!!!

I have wanted one of these for a very long time.  Murray does not do a lot of appearances which has kept the value attached to his autograph higher than most of the players that joined the HOF around the same time as he did.  That has led me to hold off and wait for a special to come my way – and until now that has not worked in my favor.

But now, the ball is mine and it is an awesome addition to my collection.

And to think, both this signed baseball and the signed Fergie Jenkins jersey were all purchased after selling stacks of modern cards that were pulled from retail blaster and hangar boxes – AWESOME!!!
