2013 Topps Archives ‘Tallboys’ Subset – Buster Posey

2013 Topps Archives ‘Tallboys’ Subset – Buster Posey

With the new 2013 Topps Archives baseball card set release, the ‘Mini Tallboys’ subset is easily one of the best parts of the issue.

The cards from this subset offer a very basic, but throwback feel that screams vintage. The set is 40 cards deep and offers a nice mixture of current players, stars from the 1980′s, and Hall of Fame legends.

This is the card of Buster Posey from the set:

After completing his fifth major league season in 2013, Buster Posey has built a resume worthy of Hall of Fame chatter.

Posey is a former Rookie of the Year.  He has won an MVP Award.  He has a Silver Slugger Award to his credit.  He is a batting champion.  And he is a 2-time NL All-Star.

Best of all, Posey already has 2 trips to the World Series to his credit – and both culminated with wins.

He may not be crowned as the best catcher in the game today, but he has the skills to achieve that status.  And at the young age of just 26, the sky is his limit!

Lot Of 2 Reggie Jackson 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen – Mini Base & Mini Alternate Image

Lot Of 2 Reggie Jackson 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen – Mini Base & Mini Alternate Image

Hey, how about a nice 2-for-1 special?

Here are both of Reggie Jackson’s mini cards from the 2013 Topps Gypsy Queen set:

You’re seeing the base image and the alternate image side-by-side.  I figured since I picked them up at the same time I may as well feature them at the same time as well.

And I am loving the vintage Oakland A’s imagery!

As you know, I am a huge fan of the Gypsy Queen brand, and when they offer us throwback images like the two above of Mr. October, I get pretty excited.

I really like how the side-by-side looks when matching two similar cards from the Gypsy Queen set.  I may need to do this more often.

Giancarlo Stanton 2013 Topps – Target Exclusive Red Border

Giancarlo Stanton 2013 Topps – Target Exclusive Red Border

Another 2013 parallel?

Yes – another 2013 parallel.

AS I get ready to begin tackling the 2014 Topps Series 1 release, I still have some work to do with the 2013 set.

And my Giancarlo Stanton set is coming along nicely.  I was finally able to add the Red Border parallel to my collection and now I need to seek out the ‘tough’ ones.

Here is the Red:

The Red is not the best complement to the Marlins’ color scheme.  As a matter of fact, it really clashes.

But, it is better than the Emerald!!  🙂

Ernie Banks 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter – Base

Ernie Banks 2013 Topps Allen & Ginter – Base

There were a lot of things that I liked about the 2013 release of Allen & Ginter – and I am not a ‘Ginter Guy’.

Of all of the prior A&G releases, I think that the 2013 set brought us the nicest framing.  The muted Blue works well with a lot of team color schemes, and when the portrait features a Blue background, like this one of Ernie Banks, it ties the whole design together very nicely.

As a vintage collector that loves his legendary Cubs players, this is a match made in heaven.

Want proof?

Check out the card of Ernie Banks from the 2013 set!

It is the Blue that ties it all together without being ‘too Blue’.  The framing is perfect, the background is just right, and the wording under the player’s image is the icing on the cake.

Finally, A 2014 Topps Series 1 ‘Retail Blaster Box Break’ – Come See!!

Finally, A 2014 Topps Series 1 ‘Retail Blaster Box Break’ – Come See!!

The 2014 collecting year is officially here and your boy at ’30-YOC’ is pumped!!

I bought a retail blaster of the new 2014 Topps release the other day but due to time constraints I was not able to get to a scanner (me and my nutty social life).

So, fast forward to tonight and my cards have been scanned and I am ready to show off the full lot of cards that I ripped open.

Just as an FYI, if you didn’t already know, each blaster contains 10 packs of cards, with 8 cards per pack.  There is also a ‘Bonus’ pack that contains a Manufactured Patch card.

And now with the formalities out of the way, let me show you what I pulled from this box o’ cards!!!

Shall we?

Pack 1 – nice Kimbrel, Helton commemorative

Pack 2 – Joey Votto & AL ROY Wil Myers

Pack 3 – Sweet Griffey, blue border Miguel Cabrera, and a Pennington 2014 Power Players redemption card

Pack 4 – Mo!!

Pack 5 – lots of Red Sox and Matt Harvey

Pack 6 – Iwakuma, Tulo, and a Blue border Future Stars card of Gerrit Cole

Pack 7 – Henderson Alvarez (Marlins) and a nice Yasiel Puig ‘Future Is Now’ insert

Pack 8 – Mike Trout ‘Future Is Now’ insert saves this pack…

Pack 9 – Goldy, Blue Border Justin Ruggiano (Marlins), McCovey ‘All Rookie Cup Team’, and a beautiful Adrian Beltre Super Veterans card!

Pack 10 – Yasiel Puig base card, Joe Mauer 1989 Die Cut, and a Manny Machado ‘Future Is Now’ card

Bonus Card – David Ortiz Manufactured Patch Card!!

Overall, I have to say that I love the product.  The lines are clean, the colors are bright, and the design has just enough flash to be a nice accent to the large images being featured.

It was nice to pull two Marlins cards from this box.  And you better believe that the Super Veterans card I pulled of Adrian Beltre is step one of my building the complete subset.

And while I did not pull any cards for my Stanton, Fernandez, Harper, McCutchen, or Pedroia player collections, I think I have amassed a sold amount of workable trade-bait to help me get some of those cards through alternate methods.

How do you think I did???
