2013 Topps Update ‘Postseason Heroes’ Subset – Justin Verlander

2013 Topps Update ‘Postseason Heroes’ Subset – Justin Verlander

The 2013 Topps Update baseball card set includes a subset tagged as ‘Postseason Heroes.  And with that theme, you would expect to find cards of modern players like Albert Pujols, Edgar Renteria, and Pablo Sandoval but none of these guys made the checklist.

That does leave room for some nice surprises…

This is the card of Justin Verlander from the set:

In his 9 season career, Justin Verlander has made it to the MLB postseason four times.  He has yet to win a World Series title, but he did play in both the 2006 and 2012 World Series.

Verlander has a 7-5 postseason record, including going 0-3 in the World Series.  He has a 3.28 ERA in 15 postseason starts and has struck out 108 batters in 93 innings of work while walking just 29.

Andrew McCutchen 2012 Topps Mini – Online Exclusive

Andrew McCutchen 2012 Topps Mini – Online Exclusive

Oh yeah, I scored a nice ‘rare’ one of McCutchen for my PC.

Now, to be honest, I am really not sure just how rare this card is.  But, I do know that the distribution was online only, and only bought through Topps.  So, these were never sold at retail, which to me means that they were not mass produced.

Is that correct?  I am not sure how to find out for sure.

The card itself is simply a smaller version of McCutchen’s 2012 Topps base card.

Have a look:

You’ll see that I left the card in the penny sleeve to show the actual size versus a regular sized baseball card.

Very cool!

Giancarlo Stanton 2013 Topps Tribute – Base

Giancarlo Stanton 2013 Topps Tribute – Base

My new, modern player collections allows me to keep a closer eye on modern baseball card set releases as the guys I am going after are highly collected and more often that not will be included in the new issues as they drop.

This makes keeping up with the modern baseball card release calendar essential.

The Topps Tribute set is one that I have been familiar with as they do a nice job of including both modern player and legends in the same set.

Prior to this year, I have never sought out modern players from this set.

Now, I need to.

And I started by nabbing the base card of Giancarlo Stanton from the 2013 set.

Here it is:

Not bad for $0.75.

Did You Know…

In 1962, when Dodgers’ outfielder Maury Wills set the major league record of 104 stolen bases in a single season, he passed every major league team.  The Washington Senators had the highest team tally with 99 steals.

My 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’ Redemption Set Is COMPLETE!!! Come See!!!

My 2011 Topps ‘Prime 9 Players Of The Week’ Redemption Set Is COMPLETE!!!  Come See!!!

Well friends, another subset has been completed at ’30-Year Old Cardboard’.

And this one is superb!

Just like the ‘Prime 9 Home Run Legends’ set I built last year, this one boasts great color, sharp graphics, and a supremely high-gloss finish.

The 2011 Topps Prime 9 ‘Players Of The Week’ set features 9 players – 1 for each defensive position.  And the roster is loaded with major, major talent.

Here is a look at the whole set:

By completing this set, I have now finished both of the Topps ‘Prime 9’ redemption sets.  And I have to say that I wish that this was a series that never stopped.  The ‘Prime 9’ theme is one that could easily continue with new themes – and with solid production that matches the 2011 and 2012 sets that they already issued, the quality was definitely there!

Cheers to another completed subset!  Hip-Hip-Hooray!!
