Poor Execution

Topps’ Opening Day baseball card set was released today.  Yet, Opening Day is not for another two weeks.  Kind of odd, right??

I am one of the few collectors that I know that truly enjoys this set.  I like the theme and I love the added ‘Opening Day’ graphics.

But, it is the timing that really gets me.  Sure,  I understand why Topps may release the set prior to Opening Day.  Maybe it is to get the collectors and fans more excited about the upcoming season.

But, if I had my choice, this set would be issued after Opening Day, and it would be much larger in volume.  Today, the set consists of 220 cards, an average of 7 cards per team.  But in reality, many teams get well over 7 cards and some get well under that mark as well.  My preference would be that the set is expanded to feature each and every player that was on the starting lineup for Opening Day for their teams.  Each team would get 9 cards, adding another 70 cards to the set.  And it would be perfect if the images were snapped from the actual ‘Opening Day’ and the set was issued a few weeks after.

Enough said.

What do you think?  What Is The First Things When You Think Of When You Hear ‘Topps Opening Day’?

  1. Overhaul. This is a pretty annoying set.

    • Matt- I know it is not your favorite. What is the #1 thing you would do to change it?

      • There are so many changes I’d like to make, but I’d start by making Opening Day just like Topps sets from 1986 – 1989. I like the idea of the Team Leaders subset being a part of Opening Day and the Turn Back The Clock (but spotlighting past Opening Day heroics).

      • Matt- I love the idea of a TBC set that honors the greatest Opening Day memory for each team. I’d invest in that idea in a heartbeat!

        Nicely done by you!

  2. I’m with you on poor execution. I think Donruss did it the right way in 1987: the nine starters and a team checklist card for every team. Of course, they had to release it sometime after Opening Day actually happened, but it was a better set.

Some things I love about Topps Opening Day is the mascots, the price, and the lack of foil.

If we could combine Donruss’ implementation with the positive aspects of Topps’ set, we could have a perfect “Opening Day” set.
