Miguel Cabrera 2014 Topps Series 1 Subset – ‘Super Veterans’

Miguel Cabrera 2014 Topps Series 1 Subset – ‘Super Veterans’

When I got back into the hobby of baseball card collecting in the summer of 2008, my goal was to pay homage to the players that helped build my love for the game and the hobby.

The first subset I put together that helped me with that cause was the ‘Super Veterans’ subset from the 1983 Topps baseball card set.  This set is a beauty and it highlights the true legends of the game as their careers were winding down.

For the last few years, I have actively been begging Topps to bring this subset back and pay honor to today’s ‘Super Veterans’.  And while I cannot confirm that they obliged my request, I was very excited to see that a 15-card ‘Super Veterans’ subset was part of the 2014 Topps Series 1 release.

I am building the set now.  Here is the card of Miguel Cabrera:

The 2014 baseball season will be Cabrera’s 12th in the big leagues. At the age of just 30, he has already accomplished so much. Yet, his future still remains unbelievably bright.

Entering the season, Cabrera has a lifetime batting average of .321 with three batting titles to his credit.  He has 1,995 career hits with 365 home runs.  Cabrera also has driven in 1,260 runs during his playing days while scoring 1,064 runs.

It will be very interesting to see what the reigning 2-time AL MVP has in store for us as the 2014 baseball season unfolds.

And you can now add the Toys-R-Us parallel to my list.  I have added yet another 2014 Topps Series 1 card of Giancarlo Stanton to my collection.

Yessir, Yessir, Yessir!!!

Bryce Harper 2013 Topps Finest – Refractor!!!

Bryce Harper 2013 Topps Finest – Refractor!!!

After picking up the base card of Bryce Harper from the 2013 Topps Finest set, I set my sights on some more cards of Harper from the set including parallels to the base card and inserts.

This set is littered with both  – and they all look great!

Thus far, I have not been able to grab any of the inserts as they are selling for more than what I am wanting to pay at the moment.

But, I was able to grab the refractor parallel of Harper’s base card for a decent price.

The scan may not show it that well, but this one is all refractor-ish…

Andrew McCutchen 2010 Bowman – Base & Gold

Andrew McCutchen 2010 Bowman – Base & Gold

How about a nice 2-for-1 special on this wonderful Sunday morning???

These two beauties from the 2010 Bowman baseball card set and they feature 2013 NL MVP, Andrew McCutchen.  The base card from the set is the Black-bordered card on the right, and one on the left is the Gold-bordered parallel.

We may not have known it back in 2010 when these cards were released, but Andrew McCutchen has become one of the most well-rounded and dynamic players in the game.

I am very eager to see what he does on the field as the 2014 baseball season gets underway.  And I am even more eager to see if it turns into more victories for the Jolly Roger.

Happy Birthday Bert Blyleven!!!

Happy Birthday Bert Blyleven!!!

Bert Blyleven turns 63 years old today!!

Bert Blyleven may be more popular among baseball fans and collectors today than he was during any time in his playing days.  His recent election into the Baseball Hall of Fame coupled with his success as the had coach for the Netherlands during the WBC in 2009 has brought renewed life into collecting all things Bert.

Mr. Blyleven has put together an amazing resume.  In 22 seasons, Mr. Blyleven recorded a win-loss record of 287-250.  He threw 242 complete games and 60 shutouts.  He has tallied 3,701 career strikeouts while finishing his career with a 3.31 ERA.  He also has 2 World Series rings from his days with the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates and 1987 Minnesota Twins teams.

Happy Birthday Mr. Blyleven!!!

I Have Landed 11/12 Cards For The Andre Dawson 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Rainbow!!

I Have Landed 11/12 Cards For The Andre Dawson 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Rainbow!!

Friends, I have been working on this little project for the last few months.  And while I am unable to officially call it ‘Complete’, I am able to show it off and be proud of the work that has been put in up to this point.

I really like what Panini did with this release in 2013.  The graphics have a sharp, vintage look – from the base set to the inserts.  And I was thrilled to find the name ‘Andre Dawson’ linked to many of them.

In total, Dawson appeared on 12 different cards in this issue.  To date, I have landed 12 of them.  Some were simple to obtain.  Some were very difficult.  And some were somewhere between the two.

But, ll were fun!  And I am ready to show them off – all 11 of them!

Let’s do this…

For the base set, Dawson was featured as a member of the ‘Chicago’ franchise.  There is a base card, a gold-foil stamped State card, and a gold-foil stamped Zip Code card.

Along with the base ‘Chicago’ cards, Dawson was also featured as a short-print as a member of the ‘Montreal’ franchise.  I was able to grab the base and State versions of the card rather quickly, but the Montreal ‘Zip Code’ card has been very elusive.  With no clue as to how many were produced, I have only seen one so far – and with a $20 price tag on Ebay, I am not yet ready to take the plunge to capture card 12 of 12.

Andre was rightfully inserted into the ‘Nicknames’ subset as is celebrated as ‘Hawk’.  I love this – and the whole checklist is pretty neat.  There are three cards of Dawson in this subset – the base, the Black border, and the Gold border.

And last, but not least, Andre was also inserted into the ‘Defining Moments’ subset.  The card celebrates one of Andre’s fantastic performances during his 1987 NL MVP-winning season.  In the game he connected for three home runs and 5 RBI.  And once again the cards are available in a base version, Black border version, and Gold version.

YES!!  I love it.  All of it.

As I mentioned, this has been a lot of fun to put together and I am eager to get that pesky 12th card for my collection so I can call this rainbow complete.

But, until that time comes, I can still sit back and enjoy the 11 cards that I do have…
