Derek Jeter 2014 Topps Series 1 Subset – ‘Super Veterans’

Derek Jeter 2014 Topps Series 1 Subset – ‘Super Veterans’

When I got back into the hobby of baseball card collecting in the summer of 2008, my goal was to pay homage to the players that helped build my love for the game and the hobby.

The first subset I put together that helped me with that cause was the ‘Super Veterans’ subset from the 1983 Topps baseball card set.  This set is a beauty and it highlights the true legends of the game as their careers were winding down.

For the last few years, I have actively been begging Topps to bring this subset back and pay honor to today’s ‘Super Veterans’.  And while I cannot confirm that they obliged my request, I was very excited to see that a 15-card ‘Super Veterans’ subset was part of the 2014 Topps Series 1 release.

I am building the set now.  Here is the card of Jeter:

As we all know, the 2014 baseball season will be Derek Jeter’s final season in the major leagues.

Entering the 2014 season, Jeter was set to climb the ladder of the all-time hits list.  He entered the season with 3,316 career hits, good for 11th place.  He is the all-time Yankees leader in career hits.

Jeter is a 13-time All-Star and was the winner of the 1996 AL ROY Award.  He has captured 5 Silver Slugger awards during his career while also picking up 5 Gold Glove awards for defensive excellence at shortstop.

Jeter is the winner of 5 World Series championship rings and has appeared in the playoffs in 16 of his 20 professional seasons.

Bryce Harper 2014 Donruss – Power Plus

Bryce Harper 2014 Donruss – Power Plus

On the disabled list until at least July, I already miss watching Bryce Harper giving us a little bit of this.

Hopefully his thumb heals properly and he is able to throw the baseball and swing the bat as well as he is in this card from the 2014 Donruss set.

This card, part of the ‘Power Plus’ subset offers a nice blend of action images from the field and at the plate.

And I am ready for Bryce Harper to come back and deliver in both ways again!!

Andrew McCutchen 2012 Topps Allen & Ginter

Andrew McCutchen 2012 Topps Allen & Ginter

Smile you’re on ’30-Year Old Cardboard’!!!

This is a sweet 2012 issue of Andrew McCutchen.

2012 was the season in which ‘Cutch’ took his game to the next level and became someone who received national attention and coverage.  By the end of the 2012 season, McCutchen had raised his batting average 68 points higher than where he finished in 2011.  He raised his on-base percentage 36 points higher than his .364 from 2011.  And he also had more hits, triples, home runs, RBI, and runs scored.  2012 was a true breakout season for this young superstar!!

1996 HEADLINE: Al Leiter Throws A No-Hitter For The Florida Marlins

1996 HEADLINE:  Al Leiter Throws A No-Hitter For The Florida Marlins

On this day in 1996, All Leiter threw a no-hitter for the Florida Marlins!!!

I happened to have been at this game, and it is by far the single greatest sporting event I have ever seen live in person. This game easily trumps being at the World Series, The NBA Conference Finals, and any other baseball, basketball, or wrestling event I have ever been to.

I thought it would be fun to go back and review that original post I wrote over a year ago when I told you about ‘The Greatest Baseball Game I Have Ever Been To’. And then being a bit of a risk taker, I sent the ticket stub from that game along with a baseball card and sent them to Al Leiter in hopes of getting him to sign them for me. That went pretty well too

Thanks again Mr. Leiter. And Happy Anniversary!!!

Florida Marlins 1995 Score Select Team Set

Florida Marlins 1995 Score Select Team Set

I probably should have flipped my scan on this one to display the cards in a horizontal view versus this:

I’m sorry and I apologize.  You deserve better and the 1995 Florida Marlins deserve better.

This team set comes from the 1995 Score Select release.  The cards have a similar look to the 1983 and 1984 Topps baseball card sets with the larger action image coupled with a smaller, cameo shot of the player.

And I have to say that I really like the Gold accents that Score used for the Marlins logo stamped on it.
