The Fergie Jenkins ‘Archives Train’ keeps rolling here at ’30-YOC’ as I have now grabbed three of the four cards of Fergie from the 2014 Topps Archives set.

This is my first ‘Silver Foil’ card from the Archives set that I have picked up, and it is pretty shiny – reminding my of the platinum cards from the 2011 Topps Lineage release.

Each ‘Silver Foil’ card is serial numbered to 99 copies.  Mine is numbered as 54/99.

Of the three cards, I would say that this one is my favorite so far.

And now, I just need one more card of Fergie from the set and my ‘Jenkins Archives Rainbow’ is complete!

Today marks the anniversary of Willie McCovey’s debut in the major leagues.  That event occurred in 1959, 55 years ago!

So, why not feature another sweet card of ‘Stretch’ on this special day?

The card below is from this year’s Topps Archives set.  The card design that McCovey is featured in is from the 1989 Topps flagship set.

Thus far, this is my favorite card from the 1989 Topps portion of the Archives release.  Many feature non-action, close-up images.  While this one does not offer action, it does give us a sense of the size and strength of McCovey as not too many skinny shortstops or second baseman can walk around the field with three pieces of fresh lumber on their shoulders…

I like it!

Notes From His 1975 Season:  Tom Hilgendorf appeared in 53 games for the Phillies in 1975.  He compiled a record of 7-3 during the season with an ERA of 2.14.  In 96 innings of work, Hilgendorf allowed 81 hits and 32 runs.

Notes From Career:  In six seasons, Tom Hilgendorf played for three different baseball teams.  He appeared in 184 games during his 6-year career, finishing with a record of 19-14 with 14 saves.  In 313 innings of work, Hilgendorf compiled an ERA of 3.04 with 173 strikeouts and 127 walks allowed.

1959 HEADLINE: Willie McCovey Makes His Debut With The Giants

On this day in 1959, Willie McCovey made his major league debut with the San Francisco Giants in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

And I have to say that McCovey did pretty well in his debut – he went 4-for-4 while collecting 2 triples and 2 singles. Most importantly, the Giants beat the Pirates by a score of 7-2.

Back in ’59, who would have thought that ‘Stretch’ would go on to be a Hall of Famer with more than 500 home runs and 1,500 RBI on his resume.

Congratulations on a fantastic debut – and Happy Anniversary, Mr. McCovey!!!

Andrew McCutchen 2010 Topps ‘T206’

I picked up this card ‘On The Blind’ during a recent shopping trip on sportlots.com.  The seller I was working with had just one card of McCutchen available, so I grabbed it.

When I saw that the card was from 2010, I was excited to bring an ‘early’ card of #22 into my collection since so many of my recent purchases have focused on his 2013 & 2014 releases.

Here is the card.  It is from the Topps T-206 set:

 

Overall, the card is fair at best.  No fault of McCutchen’s, but it just does not bring much to the collector by the way of creativity or action.  And while this may be the theme of the T-206 design since it is a throwback set, I cannot help but want to have action-packed images filling my McCutchen cards.

Still, a nice, older card of the reigning MVP for my collection.  I’m pleased with the purchase, but I will make sure that the next few that I show off on the blog offer a lot more color and excitement.
