Tony Gwynn 1988 KayBee ‘Superstars Of Baseball’

Tony Gwynn 1988 KayBee ‘Superstars Of Baseball’

As I go back to collecting the superstars of my youth, it is fun to be able to revisit the cards and brands from that time.

Beyond the main card companies like Topps, Fleer, Donruss, and Score – 1988 was full of ‘extras’ from all kinds of companies that wanted in on a piece of the collecting buzz of the time.

KayBee Toystore was one of many companies that partnered up with Topps to produce cards with their branding.  The cards look nice, feature decent graphics, and almost always showcased the best players in the game.

This is the Tony Gwynn card from the 1988 KayBee ‘Superstars Of Baseball’ set.

Dustin Pedroia 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter – Base

Dustin Pedroia 2014 Topps Allen & Ginter – Base

Finally, another sweet Allen & Ginter card for the ’30-YOC’ collection.

It took me some time to find another one as I find this set to be full of boring and bland ‘stinkers’, but this card of Dustin Pedroia is on par with the Jose Fernandez card I featured here a few weeks back.

Have a look:

I love the horizontal style of this action-packed card – it is a nice deviation from the typical posed portrait, vertical style that has bored me of the Allen & Ginter brand.

And the sharper, stronger colors of the background is a very welcomed change from the muted watercolors that has been the standard for the last few years.

This card is a very solid addition to my Dustin Pedroia PC.

If A&G keeps this up, I may have to get back on board…

1990 HEADLINE: Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. Are First Father-Son Combo To Hit Back-To-Back Home Runs

1990 HEADLINE:  Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. Are First Father-Son Combo To Hit Back-To-Back Home Runs

On this day back in 1990, Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. became the first ever Father & Son duo to hit back-to-back home runs in the major leagues.

An event that must have been extremely memorable and enjoyable for the duo, the Griffey men certainly had a great evening.

Ken Sr. went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and 3 RBI.  The younger Griffey went 1-for-4 with his solo home run.  Their combined offensive output was not enough to hold of the Angels as the Mariners lost 7-5.

Still, a very memorable and historic night in Anaheim!!!

Congratulations to 2 class acts!!!

2013 Topps Heritage League Leader Card – 2012 NL HR Leaders w/Giancarlo Stanton

2013 Topps Heritage League Leader Card – 2012 NL HR Leaders w/Giancarlo Stanton

UPDATE: This post was created prior to Stanton’s horrific injury.

My guy, #27, has been on fire as of late.  Setting career highs in RBI and home runs is just proof that when healthy Giancarlo can mash with the most elite players in the sport.

This card is from the 2013 Topps Heritage set.  The card honors the National League Home Run leaders from the 2012 baseball season.

Have a look:

If all goes well, Stanton will be featured on a few more League Leader cards when the 2015 products start hitting the shelves.  As a Stanton collector, I am ready for that – and up to the challenge of collecting them all!

Bring it on!
