1989 HEADLINE: Dave Stewart Captures 20th Win For Third Straight Season
On this day in 1989, Dave Stewart of the Oakland Athletics won his 20th win of the baseball season.
The win gave Stewart 20 or more wins in three consecutive seasons, confirming his status as the team’s ace as well as being one of the best pitchers in the major leagues.
Here are the numbers from those three fantastic seasons:
1987 – 20 wins
1988 – 21 wins
1989 – 21 wins
How did he fare in 1990? Hmmmm… How about 22 wins?!?!
Congratulations on a fantastic baseball career Mr. Stewart! Happy Anniversary!!!
Just imagine how many of those 20-win seasons he might have had if he had found that forkball sooner!
Jason- Truly an undervalued player, both during his prime and now when recalling the greats from the 1980’s. One of my favorites!
I guess he’s the favorite to be the new D-Backs GM. That could be interesting.
Unclemoe, I read that too. Very interesting, but I am not sure that I’d be the guy to turn my franchise over to one with no experience at that kind of job. Still, Stewart back in the majors is a nice story.
I think if he’s picked to be the D-Backs new GM it’ll be in name only because in reality he’ll be an assistant to LaRussa.
If he would have learned about the forkball earlier he could’ve been another Bob Gibson. Stewart was a great pitcher and super intimidating.
Matt- TLR is going to have to bring in people he can work with. I like this move (if it goes down).
